Changing Belt on 1986 911 Carrara ?

My belt busted on my 1986 911 Carrara. Its the internal belt that runs the fan, not the alternator belt. Is there a diagram or instructions on this site how to change the belt ?? It looks tough to get to and Im not sure it the alternator belt has to come off first. Any help would be greatly appreciated ! What does this belt do ??

(My 911 has 300,000 miles on the original Motor and running killer !)

The fan keeps your engine from melting Do you have the tool kit in the trunk? Remove the nut, count the spacers on each side, put the belt back on and if it is too tight shift a spacer from outside the pulley to inside.

The alternator is behind the fan. The other belt goes to the AC.

Don't run it without that belt.

The internal belt runs both the fan and the alternator. THe external belt runs the AC compressor and yes it will have to come off.

Do a search on replacing the fan belt. It's not hard to do, but there are some things unique to the set up - like using all of the shims for adjustment. I think there's also a writeup in the tech articles section.

The above is all correct. There are 6 shims (thin washers) that need to go back on. Count the number between the pulley halfs and the number between the nut and the outer pulley half and replace the same way with new belt. If tension is to loose take some from between the pulleys and add them to the outside (between nut and pulley). Drive it a little first and check the tension most times a second adjustment (tension) is required for a new belt. I beleive there should be only a half inch deflection on the middle of the belt when pressing on it with your finger. Yes the Ac compressor belt needs to come off, just loosen the 4 bolts on the compressor mount and then loosen threaded adjusting bolt and slide compressor to left and belt will come off and then the fan/alternator belt is accessible. Pretty easy job and Bentleys and 101 both explian it well as does this forum.

Be damned sure you don't get it too tight or you'll be looking at new alternator bearings down the road...

The Bentley manual says 5mm (less than 1/4") deflection for the fan/alternator belt. Wayne's book says 1/4-1/2". Which one is right?

Re the AC...What is the recommended deflection on the AC compressor belt? Bentley says nothing about it.

Just make it nice and firm. If there's no squealing, you're good.

It is sometimes a pain to find a replacement belt that is really the right size. Make sure none of the old belt pieces were sucked into the fan. If they were, they are on top of the cylinder cooling fins. Not a good thing. Look around with a flashlight behind the fan.

ron, if your ac no longer blows cold, you can snip (and leave off) the ac belt to make replacing the fan/alternator belt easier. You may also have a spare (but quite old) alternator/fan belt in your tool roll

Use the half moon looking wrench in the toolkit to hold the fan while you break the nut free. And use it again to tighten it up. 22mm socket size (7/8 in a pinch). Good luck.

The info on that link is all over the map. 10-15mm is 2-to-3x the 5mm the Bentley manual quotes.

Belt tensioning is critical as too little there's fan/alternator slippage and too much, alternator bearing damage.

I saw no mention of AC compressor belt tensioning either.

No one really knows?
