Wink New Exhaust Complete!

Just completed my exhaust project and had to post ...

Euro Pre muffler (Fabspeed) - $235
Dynomax 1 in 2 out muffler (Summit racing) - $149
SS Mandrel J-pipes (Jegs) - $25 each (2 req'd)
Flange from cat bypass to muffler (home made) - $0
Installation (by me) - $0 ....or whatever my time is worth
Smile on my face this morning when I drove it with improved sound and more power.... - Priceless!

This muffler is great. Not too loud inside, but sounds real mean at high RPMs.

SK - Can you provide more pics and more details?

- Did you have to fab your valance to fit the 2-out?
- How is the sound? Much louder?
- Do you lose heat with the J-pipes?
- Did you consider getting rid of the pre-muffler entirely and going to 2-in muffler?
- What was your power gain?
- What did it cost?

I am jealous!

vesnyder.

I have done a similar job.

- Did you have to fab your valance to fit the 2-out?
Yes, you will have to remove, alter, or fabricate a valance for 2 out.
- How is the sound? Much louder?
Generally louder, but not tons, at least not from inside the car, of course that will depend upon the muffler that you use and if you have a cat or cat bypass.
- Do you lose heat with the J-pipes?
The j-pipes are just used for the outlets from the muffler, most of the "J"'s hook is cut off. You never touch the heat exchangers in this procedure, so the heat isn't affected.
- Did you consider getting rid of the pre-muffler entirely and going to 2-in muffler?
I can't speak for SK, but that is much more expensive, I think in the range of $1000-$1500, but you can use the same technique with that setup too.
- What was your power gain?
Power gain is usually secondary to sound change. Probably not much.
- What did it cost?
Well, his muffler setup was probably about $200-$300 depending upon who does the work, and he also added a cat bypass at ~$250, so.

You can do the same thing cheaper with a $73 Flowmaster muffler, but the Dynomax is a good muffler too, and I believe it comes in Stainless where the Flowmaster only comes in aluminized steel.

If you're on a budget, go for the Dynomax Super Turbo.

Makes that Flowmaster Steve mentioned look spendy!

KTL, is this Dynomax Super Turbo setup for a 3.0 setup as well?

I simply took the part# (17266) on SK's muffler and checked that muffler's dimensions in Dynomax's catalog pdf on their site.

The Super Turbo (#17739) has the same dimensions as SK's Ultra-Flo SS model, but is one inch longer in shell length. Most likely inconsequential as these mufflers are the universal/custom-fit type.

For the size of our 3.0 and 3.2 engines, the general recommendation on Dynomax's tech. page is 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" pipes for single exhaust and 2" for dual exhaust.

Looks like the 17266 and 17739 fit the above criteria?

Here's the pdf link:

sure, same setup for 3.0 or 3.2.

As a matter of fact, Leland has the flowmaster setup on his SC, which would be the same setup regardless of muffler brand. The muffler is actually designed for late model Camaros, Firebirds, and I think also Buick Grand Nationals.

wow, that price is nice on these...thanks for the help, I know I'm going to be doing something with the exhaust and headers/bypass this spring/summer, so I'll keep this in mind...thanks for the info, from what I know my setup is only a single outlet, so I'll have to look at that direction...

I'm running Dynomax UltraFlo on my X-pipe prototype and love the sound. If I ever get some free time I'm going to investigate producing them in small quantities. Here's a pic of the setup off the car with some turbo mufflers I originally installed. Also in the picture is my old Flowmaster setup which I didn't like nearly as much as this one.

Nice catch on the part number Kevin.

Just thinking about the rear valance cutout thing, and wondered if one rolls the J-pipes downward, wouldn't that work w/o cutting the valance? Or is the J-pipe too short on the outlet end? How about an exhaust tip tot he rolled J-pipe to extend it a bit?

SK--very nice set-up!
Any pics from below? Interested in seeing how the Euro Premuffler is hooked up to the inlet of Dynomax.
What about muffler straps. Can the stock muffler straps/locations be used, or does something need to be fabricated?

What's the sound QUALITY difference between the FLowmaster vs Dynomax mufflers? Is either one more 'burbly' or 'blatty' or 'raspy' than the other?

Thanks
Mike

Souk,

I think if you turned the outlet pipes down too much, you might have a problem with scraping when you go up or back down an incline. Reason I say this is because I remember one of the fellas got a Dansk dual out muffler with the outlets turned downward and he had to turn them up higher as they hung down too much.

In my limited experience, i've found the Flowmaster products to be kinda droning or resonant. I've only heard the Flowmasters on different varieties of V8's (some strong, others not so strong), but they still all have the same droning tone in them. Maybe those like AQB who know plenty about Flowmasters can better describe how the H6 motor sounds with one? From what i've heard (literally), it sounds pretty cool.

Here's a clip from Mark Wilson's car (3.0 w/ single in, dual out)

3.0 Flowmaster- Cool!

And another cool video clip:

Wilson Video

Good thread altogether:

Flaumeister Part II: Hey Randy W, others.....

The Walker Dynomax has the typical throaty, burbly V8 sound you hear from most Dodge pickups nowadays. I like the Dynomax better than the Flowmaster. Flowmaster is comparatively annoying in V8's. Ever rode in a 5.0L automatic Mustache with these mufflers??? No thanks. As far as for the 911? AQB's crossover setup uses Dynomax mufflers. Read the last post here:

Custom X-pipe exhaust.

I could go on with this forever, so do a search like I did and you'll come up with this:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/search.php?action=showresults&searchid=212145&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

I never realized the Flowmaster muffler was such a hot topic of discussion! Still, it "sounds" like the Walker Dynomax has a more pleasing and 911 correct note than the Flowmaster. No pun intended by the way.

Thanks for the kind words KTL. I have had much experience with Flowmasters on V8 engines from regular street vehicles all the way up to 3.5" 2 chambers on my drag car and they all have some resonance to them. The Dynomax Ultraflos have fiberglass packing which Flowmaster does not and I think this leads to the more "pure" sound. Try to imagine a F1 car but at a much lower volume and you'll have an idea of how my setup sounds. I did some measurements with RonK from the board and planned to build a prototype for his car over the winter but unfortunately work and family have been to hectic to get anything done on the car. I'm hoping to start sometime in March with the goal of offering X-pipe "kits" so that the purchaser can install the tips at their desired angle. Bear in mind though that the costs associated with two mufflers and four mandrel bent pipes are signifigantly higher than a simple Flowmaster setup. I'm looking at about $400 just in costs for a SS setup.
