Porsche 1971 911e restoration
Hi All, I've recently bought a 911e thats in need of complete restoration.
The car is a sort of "Barn Find". It has had a restoration started that has stalled. It has then been thrown back together for sale. I'm intending to bring it back to concours condition and take a long time over doing so. It still has it's original Hydropnuematic suspension in place, and I'm in two minds what to do. Do I replace it with a more conventional set up or leave it as is? I understand that this set up is now very rare and as the rest of the car is very original wondered whether it was best left in place from a collectors point of view or sent to the Porsche Gods? Does it make any difference? The other question for you is where does the pressure switch normally live? It's currently lying on top of the fuel tank. I suspect thats not it's original home. I've scoured the internet and can't find a single picture of one. Maybe I'm not putting in the correct terms. Opinions and help appreciated. Thanks, Nick |

Welcome to the forum. It's one of the best I've ever seen. I'm doing an amateur restoration of a '69 E, mostly cosmetic, having engine rebuilt, re-finishing all the suspension components, replacing all rubber bushings, getting all the hardware re-plated at Tru-6, replacing all brake and fuel lines, stuff like that. I have a build thread, but it's nothing like some of the build threads you can find here, like full body off rotisserie restorations.
Get some shop manuals. Good luck and have fun. Taking your time is a good move.

For a concours resto, I would keep the hydros. They are rare and becoming more valuable everyday. If you later intend on traking it, do what you want ( but that might be a mistake).

Welcome & Ken is right - you'll find a number very interesting & informative build threads here. Be sure to take a ton of 'before' pictures (some sketching comes in very handy also) of anything you work on. When it came time for reassembly, the 'before' pics saved my sorry a$$ more times than I care to count.
Good Luck & keep us posted Cheers JB

Post some pictures and keep us posted on your progress.
Does the motor still have the MFI?

Thanks.
I thought I should keep the hydros, but I wasn’t sure. Still don’t understand where the little pressure switch box type thing should live though. Any ideas? I’m not intending on tracking it. Not if it’s going to be completely done top to bottom. I’ve read Ken’s thread and it’s going to be very useful I’m sure. A long way to go before I think of reassembling anything though. But really handy. Good job! The mfi is intact and working so there’s no great problem there. Only thing not original are the seats. They’ve been hacked about to make them look like later seats. Shame, but hopefully not irretrievable. I’ll keep in touch and post some pictures as I begin to take it apart. |
