motor mount washers?

when installing my motor yesterday I ran into a slight snag. The bolts that I pulled out of the motor when it came out don't seem right. On top of the motor mount was a large washer (2 1/2") and a small washer (normal sized for the bolt) on the bottom was a lock washer, a normal washer and a nylock bolt. When all 4 washers were on the bolt would only fit through far enough to BARELY touch the nylock part of the bolt. When I pulled off the lock washer and tried it again the end of the bolt was almost flush with the end of the nut. When I pulled off the top washer the bolt stuck through just enough to catch all the threads on the nut.

What is the proper orientation of washers on the engine motor mounts?

A "normal" nut goes there but the Nyloc isn't hurting anything. The lock washer does the locking duties.
The sequence of fasteners from top to bottom should go something like this:
1) Bolt
2) Small washer? Not stock in '73 but they starting using them in 1984.
3) Big washer
4) Rubber motor mount
5) Another Big washer (is yours missing?)
6) Engine cross member
7) Lock washer
8) Nut

If you think about it the Nyloc and the lock washer are redundant (they both do ecessencially (sp?) the same thing. You could use them both but not necessary. Use the original nuts w/ the lockwasher or toss the lockwasher and use the Nyloc.

I doubt that your motor is jacked up as high as it should go. Is the cross member right up against the bottom of the motor mount? There should be plenty of bolt. If you don't get it figured out maybe i can slide over there. I was gonna go to Lowes in a little bit anyway.

Tim,

The lock washer #11 in the PET diagram is not a 'normal' ... split SAE lock washer!!! It is supposed to be a DIN 'wave' washer which is significantly thinner than 'normal' USA lock washers.

Ditch everything but the large washers, bolt, and Nylok nut. You can install a wave washer later with the engine in place!

ok I'll put it back to spec. what are the sizes on the various nuts, bolts and washers?
Yes the motor was as high as it could go, I was actually pushing up the whole car with the jack under the motor, and there was no space between the mount and the motor bar.

Sorry for the late reply I was at dtw's house for the suspention pan replacement.

Thanks Warren, you've always got the right answer.
