Radio for 1980 SC

I have a crappy cd player in my 1980 SC that is silver in color and doesn't look good at all in the car. I am looking to put an original radio back in. What radio was used in 1980? I never listen to the radio in the car but would prefer to have a nice looking Blaupunkt instead of the spaceship looking radio that is in it.

Retrosound

I just put a Retrosound Model One in a 1970 911T - nice balance between modern tech (USB, line-in, line-out, etc) and old school style.
I reckon old radios are only worth putting in if you REALLY want absolute originality - and then, not just any period radio is enough - would have to be the exact one. I wasn't interested in going that far.

My 2 cents.

Would be interested in seeing how many of the original stereos you discover. I have a stereo from a 99 Boxer in mine and wouldn't mind putting the dash back to original. Doesn't even matter if the stereo works as I prefer the look of original.

Post #3 in this thread seems to have the answer .

What radio came in a 1980SC imported into the US?

Here is a website that sells old radios.

index

The newer Porsche Becker units fit perfectly and are also pretty handsome. Probably the best option if you can deal with the non-originality. Worked for me.

I like my Becker CDR-220. These come up from time to time in the classifieds. You need to have the reversed face plate though.

Bob, yours probably originally came with a Monterrey SQR22. My Porsche COA didn't list the radio model but I've heard that other COAs do list the equipped radio. The SQR22 and SQR23 are very similar in appearance and features. I had the same problem you have (a junky silver front Sony) and I was able to score an SQR23 for my '82 SC for $75 on the PP Used Parts forum a couple years ago. I don't expect to ever show the car so getting the model 23 didn't matter much to me. It needed a little maintenance so I sent it to Radioman in San Diego and now it works great. Blaupunkt is known for fabulous tuners and mine picks up so many stations that it's unreal.

I'd put out a WTB for a 22 or 23 and I bet you can get one pretty easily since many P-car owners go for high-end radios and put the stock Blaupunkt in storage. Since you don't intend to listen to it, that should be the end of it for you. I like music so I added a used Denon pre-amp, which required a little conversion box to switch the radio output impedance, and some nice Focal speakers . It sounds fabulous all for a little money and research and doesn't look too different from stock.

My 'book' shows that the Monterey didn't appear until '81.

Lists "Porsche CR Stereo" for 80, including Weissach and 930.

Anyway, the Monterey would look period correct.

Tom:

Which "book" are you speaking of? Not sure where I've seen it written but it seems that the Monterey was around for a long time. Not sure what a CR radio is ... do you know? Maybe Cassette Radio (CR). I suspect that it is a generic term however. Interesting question however.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.
I was interested to know what was available at the time. I would like to put in a Blaupunkt from around that era, but it doesn't need to be the exact model for my car. The reason I don't listen to music in the 911 is because I have a zune with over 2000 songs in it, an Iphone with a bunch of music in it. I listen to Pandora all day at work and in my commuter car to and from work . I play drums and at home I play along with my zune in shuffle mode to keep it interesting. I am over saturated with music. When I drive my 911, I prefer to hear the music from the engine. It's my time away from everyday life where I can relax and enjoy myself. I find the music distracting in the 911. Here is a picture of what is currently in the car. After 3 years of owning my 911, I am finally attending to some of the issues that have been bothering me including taking out the stereo.

Roger

Hey, Roger,

I don't have it with me this evening, it's the SC book, Essential Companion or something like that, Streeter or ?? is maybe the author, that shows pictorally all interior and exterior details by year, seats, radios, trim, badges, wheels, gauges, etc.

There is a series, like Carrera, 964, etc. I think.

The CR Radio was made by Becker or maybe Blau, I think. Was standard, I think, from about 77 to 80.

I can be more helpful tomorrow.

And, yes, the Monterey was around for years in the later SC and Carrera, also in the 944.

i have that book. it has a shot of the stock 80 interior and the radio shown looks like none of the ones mentioned in this thread or the other one. it's a knob cassette player with the tape player under the frequency screen. it's on page 240.

I installed a Blaupunkt "Madison" several years ago. It looks factory, and is a single CD. It's black, with no bright red, blue silver, etc. I always thought it was a perfect "look". I'll try to post a pic later, but meanwhile do a google search for it and you'll see what I mean.

kind of surprised that no one mentioned these sites. They may not be cheap but do have vintage radios.

I have a blaupunkt cr127 out of a 944 if you are looking for a replacement and don't need an exact match.

It still works so I'd take $20 plus shipping if you're interested.

If you really don't ever listen to the radio, this is a good solution;

Pelican Parts - Product Information: REN-I21-0S

that is an aftermarket piece, there is also a factory one, I have one in my car, the part number on the back of it is 911.552.436.02
