1970 911E Electrical puzzle

1970 911E

Situation: Right headlight inop low and high beam.

Began fix by thinking lamp was blown, so ordered two; got halogens while I was at it.

Installed new lamps, right side still inop – low and high beam. Ohm’d old and new lamps and all terminals have continuity. So it wasn’t the original lamp after all. I rarely drive the car at night so this problem could have existed for a long, long time.

Checked fuses. All OK.

Fuses (bottom rack)

1 – High beam left
2 – High beam right
3 – Low beam left
4 – Low beam right

Removed fuses to 2 & 4 and ohm’d to confirm LOAD wires at bus and right headlight light connector in headlight well. Checked OK. High beam is white/low beam yellow on load side.

LEFT headlight fuses 1 & 3 have BLACK power leads to the LINE side of bus. 2 & 4 (right headlight), do not.

In addition, fuse 2 – high beam right – has a blue wire to the load side; fuse 1 – high beam left – does not. What’s the blue wire to?

Any suggestions as to how to get power?

Most of the time this is due to a poor ground connection. Each set of lights has its own ground. Follow the brown wire and check its connection to the chassis.

Thanks guys. I jumped the bus power side from LEFT high beam to RIGHT high beam and jumped LEFT low beam to RIGHT low beam and all works ok. If you look closely at the wiring diagram fuses 9 -11 appear to be jumped.

For the life of me I can't figure out what happened to the original jumpers. Thanks for your help!!

Original jumpers are built into the fuse panel.
Riveted to the posts.
They fail with age.

Thanx Timmy. Didn't know that. 18G jumpers fixed it.

The jumpers are riveted to the back of the fuse block. With age corrosion gets into the rivet. Mine was causing heat from the resistance caused by the corrosion, which about melted my fuse block.

You should get the relay kit for the headlights. Or you may have more problems down the road.
