Broken brakes - Sunrise FL

Hi guys,

I bought a 1976 911S some years ago in Florida, where my sister lives, thinking it would be a nice toy I could play on my vacations.

Turns out that I barely drove it and I think selling it would be the right thing to do.

Right now it is in a storage without working brakes and burning some oil after a **** work from Adventure Tires.

Do you know any mechanic shop nearby Sunrise,FL where I could have the brakes fixed without breaking my bank?

Thank you!

Brumos is near you. They could probably buy the car from you as well.

Should I be worried about that smoke?

Did you recently do an oil change ? Did it smoke like that before the oil change ? Check oil level at the tank with engine up to temp . Looks like another classic over-fill to me !

Have you driven it lately? If the oil level is OK take it for a drive and see if it clears up.

Yea. My point was, that if it has just been sitting and not driven oil could work its way into the combustion chambers.....

Sorry to hear the car is not in the cards. Any of these shops might come out and do a Look and Bid. Might be the best way to move this car on and saves you time to boot.

I recently did an oil change at the same shop that was supposed to check the brakes (the back ones were braking a little even when not pressed)

probably collapsed brake lines not letting fluid return.
oil smoke is normal for a car that hasn't been started for a while.

I took it to a reputable shop nearby.
Very prestative people, but they only work with original/German parts and that means a lot of money that I can't spend.

Diagnostic: Complete brake failure.
They said the last owner put cheap brake calipers and they fused, so now I need a complete brake system.

All calipers front and rear total of 4
1700.00 new NOT rebuilt

All rotors coated and drilled ; German company not China
405.00
Pad sets 34.00
94.00
Master cylinder 275.00
Brake lines 166.00 full set to calipers

2670.00 parts I switched brands on parts saved you some $
All German parts NOT china
Shipping on brake parts 88.00
Labor TBD 8.0 x 139.00
1110 projected and estimated included all listed parts + diagnosis
Master cylinder and flush

Really, cheap calipers? Interesting.....

Post a shot of your calipers. I can't imagine cheap calipers on a 911, but what do I know.

I would get a second opinion. What's the name of the shop you went to?

Do you have receipts for the "cheap calipers"?

Again, post a picture of your calipers. There are real experts on this board that can give you a second opinion.

Brakes? Who needs 'em, they only slow you down. :-)

How "out my league" are you? You might be able to do the brakes your self esp, if you had a little help from someone who had more experience. The Porsche brakes aren't functionally much different from other brakes so if you had a friend who could do them on a "normal" car he would know how to do them on a Porsche.
New Genuine Porsche calipers from our host would be a little over $1200. OEM ones would be a few hundred less. Still a huge amount of money but might pay for itself when selling the car. People will pay a lot more for a car that that moves under its own power I think.

If the car has been sitting I would check for mice nest(s) on the motor. Favorite place is deep behind the fan on the right side. Since this is the intake for the air that flows over the oil cooler, you do not want this plugged with a mouse nest.

PMB did mine for a lot less than you quoted, add some stoptech rotors and you are in bidness.

That only works if your brakes rebuildable. The OP implied they weren't.

I've got a lot of questions here.

I've never heard of cheap Porsche brake calipers. Pictures please.

What's the name of the shop you're using?

There's shop rebuildable and PMB rebuildable. Take them off and send them to Eric, see what he can do. He should have a cheaper alternative for you.

As to the smoke it will most likely clear up after a good shake down ride. Selling it as-is will be $$$s lost.
