Roll Cage project. Anyone have a good picture illustration?
I am having a local race car shop who has built tube frame chassis before build me a roll cage for my SC. It's not going to be anything glamorous. I am planning on it being 6 point with removeable door bars. I am trying to build a picture book for him to get some ideas from. I have the tubing specs already. I am at the point where he wants to see some shots of one in a car so he knows what to do. He is good with bars/cages/chassis but has not worked on a 911 before.
I have pulled some images of Safety Devices, Autopower, OG Racing, and other cages to start the picture book. The images, if you can provide them, will let him know exactly where the points attach to the sills and cross in front of the knee pad and visor area. Thanks for the help. |

There are a ton of pictures on the board. Do a search (on the lower right of the pages) on "full cage" and "roll cage" and "race car interior".
THat should get you going. (Just make sure to set the "number of days"list high so that it looks back far enough.)

I did a search and did find a bunch of images but I didn't find any that represent all of the attachment poins for one cage with good shots of the other parts as well. I am hoping that someone had a cgae installed and took a good set of blow-by-blow images that I could use. If I can't get that then the images from the search should be a good starting point.

Chrisp,
Try the Projects section of http://www.gunnarracing.com/ They're currently restoring an RSR so you'll find some roll cage shots there. Always something interesting to see. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Jeez Wil, you really should do something about that stutter.

I happened across this picture of an aluminum Matter roll cage. Is it me or does it really seem flimsy? Considering that it is made out of aluminum, the bolt together arrangement (fairly long, narrow, fabricated U-shaped brackets) seems like an awfully weak way to join the pieces together.

Rolf Stommelen bought the big one at Riverside in a 935 with a factory aluminum cage in 1979

On the aluminum cage, the main hoop is welded and looks substantial. I agree the door protection is limited, but making that steel wouldn't help much.
Some grades of aluminum are very strong. I think the big resistance to aluminum cages is rapid metal fatigue. POC and PCA dont' allow them.

Chuck;
Metalurgy aside, I'm talking about these brackets -- they're not even fully boxed. ![]() I could picture these things deforming relatively easily.

I agree with what you are saying John. It's the design, not the material. If it was steel your points would still be valid.
