Need help identifying engine

Recently bought a '70 911E that has a later engine...it's a 2.7 and I was told it was a Carrera engine. The number is 6342434. I'd appreciate any input. Thx!

74 2.7 Could be a Carrera motor or a 911S as in my Red book, it lists the same serial numbers for both the 911s and the Carrera. 6340001-6342804. 1 of 528 if it is a Carrera motor.

That looks to be a 1974 S engine, also used in the U.S. Carrera. 175 hp/5800rpm. Engine type 911/93.

The ROW Carrera engine, type 911/83, was rated at 210hp/6300rpm, just for comparison.

Nope. A 911/83 Carrera engine would start with 664 instead of 634. It’s just a US engine.

Well, if it makes you feel better, the engine you have is rated at 175hp compared to the standard 911 for 1974 which was rated at 150hp. Further, all the engines for 1975-77, sold in the U.S., were S engines rated at 165hp, so you're "better" than the remaining years of 2.7s sold here.

Only the ROW S engines in '74-75 equaled 175hp, and the ROW Carrera for those same years were rated at 210hp ('76-77 rated at 200hp.)

All in all, being a '74 S that came without heat generating emissions equipment, you have a very sought after engine of that era. Keep in mind, the stud pulling is still a concern and if it hasn't been addressed, that's something to consider.

It was completely rebuilt and has about 10k on it. I meant crap that it's not the Carrera engine as it's more desirable, but I realize it's still a tad bit more special than standard. Thx for the input.

Actually, it is the Carrera engine--for 1974 U.S. cars, so if that's what you were told by the PO, it is correct information.

But I know what you meant. You wish you had the ROW Carrera engine! Now that would have been a gift that warranted a true celebration.

As L.J. has indicated, that's a great little engine, especially if it was rebuilt properly. Bruce Anderson unfairly biased the world against 2.7l engines as a group.

Been sitting a few years so going thru it obviously, but it was rebuilt by a reputable Porsche shop so I'm hoping so. Running on Weber 40's no longer MFI.

Only the row engine got mfi. It would have been cis to start. A common upgrade back then was the mfi p&c set. You’ll want to check for that and what cams to optimize performance. With carbs you should be able to get over 200hp the pretty easily.

I swear The Bruce said the 2.7 was a good engine if sorted properly.

Now, that may have been at the end of a tirade.
