Tips on refurb - Pedal Cluster

Hello Braintrust!

I am in the process of rebuilding the pedal cluster on my ‘86.

Any advice on the best way to clean these up. Is having the cluster media blasted and powder coated a good idea?

It looks like some old tar like substance came off the floor of the car and stuck to the bottom of the cluster. Is there anything that I could smear/paint into the floor to build it back up?

Lastly, there are a few small dots of rust present. How aggressive should I go at it? Paint remover and then a wire brush? Or steel wool and then some rattle can paint? Any advice is appreciated.

GK... I like the idea of blasting and PC'ing cluster parts. Need to keep the PC out of tight tolerance areas. I'd do that to start with as opposed to drilling or filing it away after the fact. Would replace all plastic bushings with metal and lightly red grease those parts. Spring is obviously not to be PC'd. Since you're in the area, and if your clutch cable is old, good time to put new one in. Linkage cups... clean them out and light touch of red grease.

I powdercoated mine and really glad I did. Also went with the bronze bushings as Karl suggested. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

Have fun though, that project will test your patience.

I just wire brushed the rust off and hit it with some rust converter.
No down time this way.

My pedal assembly was in pretty bad shape due to the clutch master leaking. I just wire brushed and painted it. Also change out the bushings and master cylinder.

I have used aftermarket bushings and OEM. I found that the OEM bushings fitted better. I have only done it twice - others may say get the aftermarket.

I want to replace the brake spring as well as the clutch spring.

The only brake spring I can find from our host is Part #: 901-423-531-00-OEM

Will this work on a 1986 pedal cluster? 1986 is not listed as a viable year.

Also, can anyone direct me to the small rubber ring that is the throttle return stop?

I think the first item is 90142319300 and the second item might be 91142339102 but check it out first.
PP seems have'em, but use google for a picture.

on the spring I got 911-423-531-03 but it comes up as NLA.
I can't say if the turbo ones are equivalents. (I have an 87 (G50) so mine may be different.)

If it isn't rusted or damaged you may be ok.

Sand blared, POR 15 paint, bronze bushings. 1+ on no downtime waiting for others.

Replace the bushings while it is out. The spring can be tough to pull back into place.

Thanks for all the support. I’ve got new bronze bushing and rubber stops coming. I’m leaning towards painting it myself. I’m in North Dallas, anyone know of a shop that would let me media blast the parts? I don’t have a media blaster, myself.
