Recommendations for Replacing Leather on Steering Wheel
I'm looking for recommendations on having the leather replaced on a Porsche extended hub 3-spoke steering wheel.
I've read good things about Dallas Custom Steering Wheels. My primary concern with DCSW is the leather samples Donald sent me look nothing like the leather on the 4 wheels I have. The samples he sent all look much more flat than the leather on the wheels I have. Back in the '80s and early '90s I had several wheels done by Alan Gunn. The work he did for me was beautiful. He was very attentive to what I wanted done and did exactly what I asked. All I've read about him in this forum for the past 5 years or so has all been negative. I don't want any of the purists out there to pass out or have a heart attack, but I bought this extended hub wheel needing new leather so I can have the grip increased to 4.25". I'm hoping any of you with prior experience will comment. Dall |

When I sent him my wheel I told him to match the color of the leather on the bottom inside part of the wheel, and I circled it with a magic marker. I also wanted the texture and stitches to match the OEM wheel. He did just that. Talk to him on the phone, and I bet he will say to send it to him, and he will find the leather that matches if that is what you want. It is not like dealing with a typical massive business or government bureaucracy, he really is there to make you happy.

Glen,
I just received the following response from Donald after sending him an email asking if he will match the leather currently on the wheel: "That's the leather we use for all early 911, 914, 911 SC and 80s 911.". I've seen wheels he's done with "his" leather. It is not even close to the original black. Dall Last edited by 1989Carrera; 02-21-2022 at 10:20 AM.. |

This was posted recently and shows an early 911 wheel refinished by Donald.
Perhaps you got a bad sample? https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1113085-too-much-patina-show-me-yours.html#post11612426

I used Craft Customs on two wheels. They turned out great. Their shop is in Rockwall.

No, not a bad sample. The sample is an exact match to my friend's 911 steering wheel done by DCSW. |
