OK, I give up - steering column help 1970 911E

I am trying to replace my instrument lights with LEDs. To remove the tach, I must remove the decorative clamshell around the hi beam/turn signal levers.

There are two screws, one on each side and I have removed them. But the clamshell is still on tight.

Anyone???

If it's the same as my 79SC the steering wheel needs to come off to access the other screws.

Yup. It can be done without removal with a bit of wiggling. You just need to get the tach out enough to turn sideways a bit to get at the bulbs. One bulb to the left, one to the right.

Thanx guys. But first I have to remove the clamshells. Do I really need to remove the steering wheel in a 1970????

Yes. There are two screws you need to remove to get to take the clam shell off. Steering wheel has to come off first.

Thanks everybody. I learned something today. If you first google what your looking for it takes you to the PP pages that you need. They show that the steering wheel must come off.

Thanks for your help, as usual.....

Steering wheel removal is easy so don't fret...just make sure to mark the wheel hub with the shaft before pulling it off to ensure it goes back in the same orientation...assuming you were happy with its position, i.e. straight wheel when driving straight

The point is, you dont have to take the clam shells off.. Just push up on the dash and wiggle it out..
