Lift engine off ATV jack onto engine stand - where is my lifting eye??

Have dropped engine & trans together from 79SC and need to raise it in the air a bit to remove the transmission. I will use a balancer with chains attached to the big rear bracket but can’t figure out where to attach at the front.

I can’t seem to find a lifting eye near the breather that others have referenced - here is a closeup of the rear of my engine:

The eye was present on my 993 engine, though IIRC I may have had to remove the varioram before I could access it.. not sure though.

Don’t want to separate them in place because they are not individually balanced on the jacks, pretty sure something is going to fall off unless the engine is suspended. The weight of the trans I can handle, but not the engine.

So where the heck do I attach the chains to the front of the engine??

I use a tow strap, inserting the hooks into the bolt holes of the cross member where it normally bolts to the car

For the other end, I've either put straps around the the headers or inserted bolts in the holes where the tranny bolts up

thanks wayner, the cross member (aka big rear bracket) at the rear is a given, it’s the front end I’m puzzling about. Can’t use the transmission bolt locations because it’s still attached, and I won’t risk separating them in their current precariously balanced state.

I guess I could try straps under the heat exchangers but am concerned this might bend the engine tin. From the dent in the tin in pic below, it looks like that may have happened already though:

I have no idea what that is. Can you post a pic?

Engine hoist.........

Brian,

Do you have an engine hoist to lift the engine and trans combo? If you do, I will share some tricks to do it conveniently. Please advise. Thanks.

1) Chain through the lifting eye on the engine.
2) Slide the whole engine/transmission assembly forward under you car so that...
3) Place the engine/transmission assembly so that the lifting eye is under the end cross member of your lift....
4) Place other end of chain over the cross member and back down towards the engine, secure chain with bolt-washers-nut through a couple of links of the chain...
5) Have a pair of pallets ready, one to support the engine, the other for the transmission..
6) Push the button on your lift to take the car AND the engine/trans assembly UP...
7) Place pallets where you need them.
8) Push button on your lift to take car and engine/trans assembly DOWN

Realize, you will have to fiddle around with the clutch release arm/Omega spring before the engine and transmission will come apart.

Good Luck!

Hi Tony,

Got rid of hoist after last engine R&R, wife complained it was taking up too much garage room (and she was right). But I have a 4 post lift that will work as well with a chain over the crossbar, and an engine leveller to attach front & back of engine.

TIA and Merry Christmas!

And that is exactly the problem: I cannot find the lifting eye. See first pic, I would have expected the eye to be about in the middle of the photo just behind the engine tin but it’s not there.

Is it missing?
Did it get located in a different spot on the SC engine??
???

If I understand your problem correctly... There should be a crankcase bolt just in front of your breather cover. Unbolt the nut and install a lifting eye there.

Best of luck,

Rahl

2 separate SC engines. Lifting eye looks the same and in the same spot.

SC,

If this is your work area, you really got to be creative to get things done!!!!!!! Just to move the engine stand with motor (shown in your picture) in a sand dune will take some remarkable effort. I have my hat off and bow my head to you. How do you rebuild engines in this kind of environment? My work area looks like a clean room compared to yours. How do you do it?

When I first saw the picture, it reminded me of Robinson Crusoe rebuilding a motor in a deserted tropical island. I am just kidding!!!!!!! Merry X’mas.

Ha! Yes, this was part of the tear down of my engine, with "The Wizard" and his incredible wand of steam cleaning things up in the sandbox. The sandbox is blasting sand. It occasionally gets shoveled through a series of sieves with a motorized shaker and stored in containers......ready to go through the sandblaster (again) when it is more than 90F and 80% relative humidity in a Mississippi June!

All the engine work is done inside in a clean environment.

Merry Christmas to you as well Tony!

Hi Brian..i think nobody has stolen your engine eye..
.What has happened is,in the past some mechanic was replacing the breather cover gasket . To make it easier for him to do the job ,he removed the eye. Then he did not bother to put it back.
BTW..do i see a crack on your air box?

Ivan

You can always get some cheap ratcheting tie-down straps and strap the engine to the engine jack so it won't move when the tranny comes off.. I did something similar to keep the assembly balanced while I wheeled it around the shop. As for the lifting eye(s), you can get creative with some 2" flat stock, a grinder and drills!

This is not a big mystery is it?
Attach the engine mount yolk, use the chain on the yolk.

The transmission is still connected to the motor. So you need to remove the transmission first before you could install the engine yoke. Unless you have a method you like to share with us. Thanks.
