Question Engine ID help

Amidst almost 2' of snow, I found time to play.

Can anyone help with this engine number: 6311450.

Thanks in advance.

Gone snow shoveling

Amazing oversight on Porsche's part - they repeated a series of engine numbers they'd already used 10 years previously !

6311450 can also be a 1981 ROW 3.0SC

Ok . . . the above begs the question, both the 2.2 and 3.0 have red cowling right??? How do we tell the difference??

Forgot to say the engine has 40ida 10s on it so I can't tell based on the induction system.

2.2 has MFI (vertical throttle bodies), mag cases
3.0 has CIS injection (curved alloy throttle bodies), aluminium cases

Sorry, wrote this before you edited!

You need to look at the casting numbers on the cases

the 3.0 has a 930 number I believe

Easiest way to determine which of the 2 engines it is will be to check the engine type number (on flat horizontal part of the crankcase to the rhs of the fan) - '71 S engine is 911/02, '81 SC is 930/10

Thanks guys. I'm leaning on the engine being a 2.2. No updated valve covers, no oil fed tensioners. My guess is that if a swap was done that stuff would have been done.

In addition the vin is 9111310586.

I'm guessing that Porsche figured that if you can't tell the difference between the two, then it wouldn't matter much. After all 180 hp is 180hp right
