Ready for DE-what do you think?

Well, she's ready for the DE this weekend, tech inspection is tonight. Here she is with a bra on, which I bought for track events. What do you think of the look? I know I'm going to get flamed, but since I just spent a fair amount of money getting her painted, I got a bra to protect her on long trips or track events, and I actually think it looks good. The black balances out the bright work, and matches the rubber on the tail and the Targa top.

911's are always happiest when they are going to the track!

When you get to the track, place some tape on the leading edge of your numbers. Yes, the magnetic numbers do come off and when they do they are not worth much after being run over.

Tape is a good idea - but use either Racer's Tape or 3M Painter's tape - the adhesive won't stick to your new paint. I'd cover the fogs and maybe the lights, as well as the leading edge of the numbers. The Bra looks good, but I'm a little wary of them rubbing the paint. Make sure you have a good coat of wax down under it. You might want to check out Chuck Moreland's track skins to protect the whole hood.

DE sounds like fun - let us know how it goes!

I do have a good coat of wax on the hood, and I've got pads of felt in various places underneath the bra. I thought I've seen/heard people recommend bras for the track due to rocks and such hitting the front at high speeds. In fact Black Beauty #1 was one of them.

You've got to weigh the benefits. One or Two rock chips versus a permanent outline of your bra etched onto your new paint. Me, I'll take my chances with the stones.

I truly don't believe that using a bra from time to time for long trips and track time is going to do anything as far as a permanent outline goes (unless it gets wet and I leave it on to dry).

89911- Why do you say there would be a permanent outline of a bra etched into the paint? I know there's a risk of that if you leave the car out in the rain, or in the sun for months on end, but is there some 100mph effect I don't know about?

I'm just a firm believer of not putting anything on your cars surface unless its adhered, such as armour fend or other adhered protectice coatings. No matter how much you clean your car before hand, road dust will get between the bra and the car. Factor this in with the constant shifting and buffeting from wind and you have a nice little rubbing compound going. This happened to me with a MagBra after only one DE event. I still have the faint outline of the thing on my hood. My car is over 13 years old and has but a few chips after years of DE's. If your car is getting really bombarded with stones, then a bra isn't going to help the other portions of your car that get hit. Last year, I replaced my torsion bars and removed the black fender guards. The paint under there was perfect, after years of being covered. Occasionally used bra's perhaps won't add up to any noticable damage to the paints finish, but it is an additive effect and more noticable with darker finishes.

the bras can kinda flutter while at speed, somehow they can get grit trapped under the trailing edge. Next run that grit get sanded into the paint, hence the outline of the bra. If a car in fornt of you gets into the marbles, it will toss up an amazing assortment of crapola that will soil your car.

Ive seen guys use this brush on latex film (think its a 3M product) to protect the leading edges. It then washes off with soap and water.

When on the track dont be ashamed if you get passed ( it will happen) get a feel for the car and always focus ahead on the track, "where you are going, not where you are"

Most of all have fun!

Hi Ed,

I assume you are going to the MSR this weekend with the Maverick region? Looks like rain on Sunday unfortunately! I'll be there, either in the yellow/black Viper, or in a white 87 Cab. Car number is 71- Stop by and say hi!

Paul:
First of all, it looks like you've got constant stress in your life-having to decide what to drive.

Rain-It depends on who your looking at for the forecast. Before I make plans to take my plane up, I look at about 3 different forecasts, and pick the one I like the best. Then you remain optimistic as all heck that it will be the prevailing one!
