Sound like Old Pointer is the winner for my 911s. Gapping pointer has always a piece of cake for me, even old pointer can be clean up with sand paper for temporary use to get to destinations of trips before it needed to changed out. Thanks for all inputs.

Agreed with new Bosch points too. Check where the red plastic landing pad is riveted to the metal. Often, the pad is split by the rivet on assembly. Went through a box of 50 and threw half of them out! ![]()

I've been running Pertronix in my 911 with no ill effects for several years.
Question - Other than points, what's the next "go to" replacement? Crane optical pick-up? Other suggestions? |

Best improvement for the money you will ever make. Install and forget.
Points and setting dwell is a PITA. Petronics is how the car runs with the perfect point set up but all the time. Chris 73 E |

How is setting the points a PITA it takes 5 minutes? Only needs to be done every 10,000-15,000 miles. I'll tell you what is a PITA breaking down on the road with a Pertonix unit in your distributor.

setting dwell is a PITA. a zillameter move makes a huge difference on Dwell. Will run good for a long time. Will run great for a few thousand miles

^ We’re working on a high quality solution for points replacement. Should be available end of the year.

I had a Crane XR-1 kit on my RS spec 2.7 for years with zero issues, but that's just another anecdotal opinion
It might be a toss up between Pertronix and Crane pointless IGN. conversions given gradual product revisions and improvements (btw, Crane evidently sold their ignition biz to FAST). The main difference between the two systems, QC issues aside, is their switching mechanism: optical (Crane) and magnetic (Pertronic) and any compatibility issues with the tach. Any concrete HP/torque assertions between either one is suspect. These and other similar products have been around for years. By now, I'd think most issues of compatibility and longevity have been addressed. Here's one of many discussions: Pertronix vs Crane Ignition Sherwood. |

Hold one of those magnetic collars to your ear and shake it, you can hear the magnets rattling around!
