Dumb headliner question re "sag"

The headliner in my 85 Carrera isn't really sagging low... it's taut across the roof, but there is a bit of a gap (maybe 3/4") between the headliner and the roof that I can feel if I press on the headliner. This is aft of the sunroof. I'd like that headroom back, as I'm taller than the average bear. Is there a good, non-kludgy way to affix the headliner to the roof?

Thanks!

It may Ben that the cloth sleeve that the rod goes through has rotted through, which will allow it to sag. If so there is no fixing it without removing and replacing it.

Am I correct in interpreting your response to mean that there should be no air gap between the roof panel and the headliner in the area behind the sunroof?

Guess I was reading it wrong. Do you want to remove the rods and affix the headliner to the roof?
