Engine Bay Question
My firewall is completly worn out on my '84 targa.
Just wondering if I should strip it off and clean up the back area or, buy a new one. Oh yeah, will the heat from the engine mess up anything in the car if I take out the firewall? |

I think he means the sound pad. Beau, it won't hurt anything to leave it off, just a bit louder in the cabin. The replacement pad is actually much lighter and better, but a ***** to install with the engine in the car.

yeah, soundpad i sometimes call it a firewall. Anyway it's the big black padding in the back of the bay.

Some guys prefer the sound with the pad missing. I think the worst thing, though, is the old, leftover glue etc that get left behind when the pad disintregrates. That stuff is tough to get off and looks bad. A new pad hides all that. When I installed mine, I left a small hole or cavity above the mixture adjusting screw opening in order to get the wrench in there more easily.

Sound pad
I bought the stock pad. I wish I had bought improved aftermarket one that is easier to clean and brighter.
Look around, maybe at Performance before you buy one. There are options. |

FWIW, firewall is the steel plate that acts as a wall or barrier to any fires (also give some torsional rigidity). It sounded like you had a horrendus rust problem.
I like the new, stock sound pads. there are threads on how to install them. You might be able to do it via a partial engine drop. When you scrape the foam shreds off - be very careful to not let them get into the engine... How do you feel about dropping the engine & tranny, cleaning everything up, doing any soon-to-be-need maint. and putting in a new sound pad? that's the issue for you to think aobut..... Good luck. |

I think what Ill do now is scrape the old pad off and try driving around like that. I guess if dont like the extra noise ill put a new pad in . Thanks again for the input guys.
