Steve Wong chip worked for my 87 Carrera

Dunno if it was the DME rebuild or the chip but I really notice the difference. Stock '87 Carrera that wouldn't start due to failed spark circuit in DME. Sent it to Wong and decided to have him put a 93 octane stock exhaust chip in while he's in there. Really notice the difference- now I can start off in 2nd but before I couldn't (except in my 928 :)). Also smoother idle (again, may be due to fixed DME circuit) and more torque. Now in addition to just being noisy, the car seems more energetic. No noticeable change in fuel economy and no knocking so far (although it's been cold). Your mileage may vary but it worked for me!

Some of the best money I’ve spent on my 3.2 thus far. Noticeably improves the driving feel of the car.

The only downside? It took away some of the rowdy sound at idle... :)

One of the guys I autocross with, has a1987 targa and took his car to Steve Wong for a chip and dyno tune and came away with 214 hp at rear wheels, he also had an aftermarket exhaust

The other benefit of the SW chip, is that there really is a guy, Steve Wong, programming this stuff. It's not some nameless, unknown technician. Have an issue, and you can actually contact Steve to answer a question or tailor the chip to your specific application.

I have one in my 89 Carrera and it totally wakes the car up.
I had him do a custom live onsite tune of my built 964 motor that ive kept the motronic on and measurable increase in power/smoothness/safeness of AFR and drivability. Super happy with it.

OP, I just installed a SW chip at the end of last season in my ‘84. I’m now jonzing to take the car out. Last fall was just a tease! One thing that you may run into with an ‘84 is having to bypass a connection in your DME. This was a bit problematic for me and I ended up having to send the whole unit to Steve for repair. From what I understand, I got unlucky and it’s not a common problem. The chip comes with detailed instruction on how to perform the modification.

I’ve had one in my 86 Targa for the last five years. Nothing exotic, just coded for street driving on 93 octane with stock exhaust. Helped smooth everything out. Kept the old chip in a box just in case. At this point, it’s never going back in unless the next owner wants it.

I've posted this previously, but my story bears repeating... Steve’s customer service has been nothing short of stellar (86 3.2 Coupe). Three years ago, Steve rebuilt her DME and added his stock configuration performance chip. The results have been phenomenal. However, last year (right after pulling her out of Winter hibernation) she began to exhibit severe hesitation and bucking above 4K rpm.

Every possible explanation was reviewed and checked including CO level, Fuel Pressure, Spark, Timing and Ground- at one point a stock DME swap was done- to no avail.

I emailed Steve and explained the situation hoping he might have some thoughts or insight- his almost immediate response… check the gap on the ref/rpm sensors (which are only 4 years old). Steve correctly stated that if too far away, the signal will get weaker as the rpms rise, leading to cutting out past a rpm point, in my case, 4k and up. Gap was checked, and sure enough it was too wide (needs to be 0.8mm). Steve took the time to respond to my emails and work with me to help resolve the issue. Again, truly fantastic customer service, and she runs better than ever.

How much was it ?

3.2 Chippy

I just ordered mine after all the mental debate of spending USD 495.00 for power band smoothing ;)
I just did a FS exhaust this winter so I figure, what the hell. The first drive should be fun in April. Been working on the car all winter as its my first air-cooled so not sure what the seat meter will think. I'm coming from a supercharged 968 with 310 bhp but it is a little heavier.

I’ll never go back.
