Steve Wong chip. Any thoughts?
I’m thinking of putting in a chip in my 84 targa. Any experience on performance, downsides, or general thoughts in changing the chip?

You will have a hard time finding someone on this board who does not recommend a SW Chip. Steve is a pleasure to work with, too.
I have limited mechanical experience and was able to do the install on my own. Lots of information on the install is available. Let us know if you have any questions.

He is THE man for these things. Nobody better, IMHO.

my 85 Targa with SW chip and MandK premuffler is an entirely woken up car from stock.
There can be a hint of low rpm - 2k or so - jarring - minor but the only thing that isn't as smooth as stock set up IME |

Also... I've had some different results on the same chip. For example, I purchased a custom chip that was setup for my car with an open exhaust (straight pipes). Strangely enough, the car actually runs better with my stock exhaust on the same chip.

Would it make a car difficult to pass smog in California?

My '85 would do a bit of bucking at low speed in parking lots, etc. before I put the chip in (standard exhaust, etc.). Smoothed it right out; was no longer a bucking bronco. I'd recommend it. No complaints w/ my '88, though, so I haven't bothered.

Had this in my 1990 c2. loved it. Getting the ecu open was a bit tricky but other than that it was an easy install.

Google or search the forums for Sal Carcella. He has an amazing products for the 3.2 that I am planning to use instead of the SW Chip. Ask around and do your own due diligence, but everyone I speak with says he's the real deal, just not as well known.

well? of course there are more people who do the chips..for example i used to have Autothority Chip from east coast or California based Australian company Power-Chip..so far the best was for me S.W. chip.

My advice would be to give him a call and discuss your objectives and your concerns. He's a straight shooter and very knowledgeable.

Steve's chip really improved my car's responsiveness; night and day difference. The engine runs smoother, pulls cleanly from low revs all the way to redline. His installation instructions made the chip swap easy. No downsides in my book.

I bought mine after four years of ownership and wondered why I waited so long after I did. It really wakes up the lower end of the power band more than anything which improves general driveability.
