What gives the 3.2 carrera it’s whale sound?

These guys are messing with you. It's wail, not whale.

We had a thread a few years back talking about the same thing. Some said fan some said valve train.

So I made a youtube vid of my SC with and without the fan belt attached blipping the throttle at higher rpm

It's way less fan than valve train. I can't find the video link though. It's posted in these archives.

It's the IMS gears meshing. That's the whirring sound.

They're nearly straight cut gears.

The Triumph motorcycles from the 2000's had gear driven valvetrain and had a unique sound as a result. Amazing how much personality something like that noise can add to an engine.

My favorite noise from these flat 6s is at about 4500rpm with the unique firing order!

The FINS on an air cooled engine vibrate with a certain resonance, adding to the ORCAstra of intake noise, exhaust and valve train

It’s a sound from an earlier time, but at one point that’s what race cars sounded like

You can recognize hints of it in air cooled multi cylinder motorcycles of the day (Honda 550 , 400/4 and 750 for example, but the sweetest was the Lavern’s triple (triples have a lot in common with our engines)
