911 T/R Info Wanted

I have quite a number of texts, but just can't find much on the 911 T/R. My understanding is that this was a '68 only evolution of the '67 R. Is that correct? Can anyone direct me to some reference material? I've googled, and basically come up empty handed.

Thanks, Ron

There is a bit on this site, but you might be better off heading to the Early S Registry... Here's a link to a genuine 911T/R over here in Australia.

OK,

So from what I gather, the '68 T/R is essentially a standard bodied '68 model with some of the '67 R bits added. No lightweight panels, all glass in the windows. Hopped up motor (R spec). No hood/fuel tank mods, oil tank to the rear, rather than forward.

Anything obvious that I'm missing?

Thanks, Ron

The TR had fender flairs similar to the R. The motor on the one shown is 906 spec. This car was spec'd for Rally use and had some Euro Rally history. As with many Rally cars this one was equiped with a Webasco heater.

Boba, Flieger

Thanks for the pictures.

I'm still trying to decide what to do with the Targa. I can't leave well enough alone. Probably makes the most financial sense to restore it to stock, but I've done that before (and am more or less doing that to the '67 912 Coupe right now). I'm really looking at doing something rally oriented, bigger flares, but at least sort of "period correct."

Does anyone know of an early "ST" like treatment done to a SWB back in the day?

Thanks, again.

My 1968 t/r

Hi Igo...

I currently own a 1968 911 T/R...

Here's a photo gallery: http://gallery.me.com/johnbri#100038

The T/R was one of the first factory hot rod versions of the 911. After realizing that they had an awesome racer on their hands with the 1967 911R, the factory made a group of cars available with a variety of hi-performance parts in 1968. At the top of the line was the twin-plug "carrera 6" engine with lots of titanium bits, of which my car has.

They offered the lightweight seats, sound insulating delete, "airport" gears, rally footboards, trim delete, bigger rims, larger "rally" fuel tank, heavy sway bars, and limited slip diff, amongst other go-fast bits.

Someone in the thread wrote that they were not available with lightweight panels, but my car has a lightweight aluminum engine cover. I don't know if this came from the factory (not on the order sheet) or if it was added later. Mine also has rear fender flares (real ST stuff) added in 1970. The black and white picture in the thread showing car #196 is my car pre 1970 when the flares were added (note swiss registration plate 1514).

With the Carrera 6 twin plug motor it runs like a sick dog below about 6400 RPM. But once it gets up into the sweet spot, watch out! It screams all the way around the track.

I have a lot more period material scanned, but I don't have access to that computer right now. When I can get to it, I'll post more.

What's your interest in the T/R?

John

Fish,

Unfortunately my 16 year old son knows damn well where I hide my keys!!!! I just hope he behaves if he ever takes one of these cars for a ride.

Thanks for your comments. The car has really neat racing history. It was raced between 1968-72 by a swiss driver, Ernst "Hunter" Sieler, at most of the big races in Germany and Switzerland. It was fully restored about 4 years ago in Europe. I've driven it at Lime Rock and lightly at Daytona at Rennsport III. It was photographed for the new Rennsport book. I haven't heard when that book is coming out...anyone know about that?

Hey Bob T, do you own that white T/R??? That's a very tidy original looking car. In some ways I wish mine didn't have the ST flares on it. But that's the way they raced many of them post 1970.

I'll post more period photos and documentation when I get access to one of my other computers.

John

John,
I would love to say that I own that car but I don't. I do own a 68L and the TRs have been a great inspiration...when you can find info on them. I built my car based on the Alan Hamilton TR. Bob Aines was kind enough to send pics of the above white TR long ago and I admit to staring at them on a weekly basis.
Ron,
I would suggest visiting the Early 911S Registry for all things long hood. Do a search under TR. I started a thread awhile back along with a few others. The info is out there.
Start here: http://www.early911sregistry.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21915&highlight=ultimate

All you need for a 911TR is a can of RED paint, a brush, and a day of sunny weather.

Bam! 911 Testa Rossa!

John, Bob,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post.

And both of you, thankyou for posting the links. I'll spend some time investigating as soon as I get un-buried at work.

I have a set of FIA Homologation paperwork for the '68 911T, Group 4 GT, complete with stamps and attachments. It will tell you exactly what was legal at the time with associated part numbers, photos and dimentions.

More T/R info

Woody Thanks.

As promised, here are about a dozen pages from the 1968 factory publication called "information regarding Porsche vehicles used for sports purposes" . This publication spells out all of the different options available for the 911 L "Rally" package and the 911 T/R package. There is a wealth of information in this book including rules to qualify for the different FIA group 2 & 3 homologations.

I'll try to post more soon.

John

another page

Sorry about the last post, some of the pages are out of order, I'm not as much of a computer geek as I thought I was. But you can see the page numbers at the bottom of each page, and make sense out of it that way.

Also, Here is page 12.
