Hi everyone,
I'm quite curious to know about the various tails that Porsche used over the years (before the automatic tail was released). The most common to me are the Carrera, Turbo and Duck style tails. I realize that the standard Carrera and Turbo tails had a rubber lip, but I've also seen some Carrera-like tails that seem to be all composite based, however I don't know if they're factory or not. I found a picture of what I believe is a rare model called the Carrera "Leichtbau" that has a one-piece, factory fiberglass tail/lid (among other weight saving items, like fiberglass doors and lexan side windows), which looks strikingly similar to the RS America tail pictured in yellow. Did Porsche ever use the yellow tail pictured as a factory item? Is there a reference to all of the tails they offered, and on what model years they were available? Thanks!! ![]() ![]() ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |

They did in the mid to late '70's offer a tail that was basically all rubber, but I haven't seen/heard of one that was hard like fiberglass before the RSA tail. That definitely doesn't mean it doesn't exist because I am no expert.

So the yellow RS America tail pictured above was indeed a factory offering?

That yellow tail looks like the tail on the 1992 Turbo S "leichtbau"; the car that had the same interior as the RS964 and a 3.3 380 HP engine. It was the car that introduced the round openings in the rear fenders.

I have an RS America tail on my car and it looks nothing like the one in yellow. It looks just like a carrera tail. It is fiberglass. Was the carrera tail base not fiberglass? Alum.?
I don't know what that yellow tail is...maybe aftermarket? Don 87 coupe |

It looks to be either Turbo S tail, or factory C2 "Lightweight" tail. Or maybe a German tuner special (Rolf Sprenger, Jurgen Barth, etc.)

Here's a pic of the late 70's poly-urethane spoiler;

I think I finally found a factory car with a strikingly similar version of the solid composite yellow tail above. I kind of like the "rubberless" tail, and also like the large base (for a big condenser so my A/C will work here in Florida!!).
The car is a '93 911 Carrera Turbo S. With the tail being a solid color, it looks much less obtrusive, and more updated. ![]() ------------------ Michael '78 911SC Euro |
