Window wont go up :( 88 carrera
88 carrera.
Drivers side window went down (half way), but wont go back up. No motor noise. First happened a few weeks ago, i turned the car off, then back on and it went up with no issue. Worked next few times i did it. However, today it happened again and i cant get it up (insert a funny joke). Passenger side works with no problem. Whats the likely culprit? Switch or the motor? Is panel easy to take off? How do i test this? |

I would swap the switch with the passenger window to isolate motor or switch.

window switch
Try this ,
Start your car ,so it is running, then sit inside with door closed, Push with one hand on very edge of switch as hard as you can then with other hand try the window switch, what this might do is move a loose connection inside your switch enough to make it work, then you will know the problem is in the switch connection. |

Get into your tool bag. There's a tool which inserts into the gear (on my '88, you have to remove the tweeter cover and poke thru the vapor barrier). Wind it up or down a bit to see if that frees it up. Take a look in your owner's manual; I believe it addresses the use of that tool.
Mine occasionally gets stuck on the passenger side. I've been too lazy to change the motor out, but what works is if I hold the switch in the up position, then bang on the door card where the motor is located it frees itself up. I've cleaned & lubed the track, so that's not it. The motor is most likely seizing when it's in the mood & probably needs to be removed & lubed or replaced.

Motor is probably seized. It can be removed, then take the housing off the motor and unseize the bearing. John Walker has written a post about it. Reasonably easy and you don't have to buy a new motor.

I would try HarldMHedge's suggestion first. I have had the wires in the back of the switch pull free before. Simply prying the switch out and reseating the wires fixed the problem. Or, it's possible the switch may be bad. If even that doesn't fix it, then you may be looking at replacing the motor, but I pulling the door apart is a bit of a PITA, so check to see if it's not the first couple of things first.
If you have to replace the motor, also check to see if the regulator pivot post hasn't snapped off, as a broken one will still allow the motor to work, but puts more pressure on it. You can jury rig a repair for that--you don't have to buy a new regulator just for a broken off pivot post.
