Yes Greyhound , using a plastic container from home Depot. The max shipping weight for Greyhound is 100 lbs. I had to remove stub axles, and empty the oil and I barely make it to 100 lbs.

I was looking to go on amazon and buy a specific cooler. Anyone know which one is closest to a perfect fit?

Should fit in an old plastic Igloo cooler...or so I have been told.

Just checked..the local Wally mart sells a 48 quart "island breeze" version for like $17. it looks about the right size. Go measure it or just buy it and see if it works. For $17, not a lot of risk.

The issue is keeping it locked in position, which is easier in a wood crate. You don't want the shift rod poking through the end of the cooler or the bellhousing broken.

I had one shipped air freight in a wood pelleted container . Not that expensive considering. They used a fork lift BTW, when I picked it up.

Fed/UPS has (used to) have a 150lb limit. Not sure I would use them as we had an air conditioner shipped and it had been dropped. The truck driver was fairly strong, even so, luckily I was there to help unload it. Otherwise it would have been dumped on the ground.

That and several large Instapack Quick RT foam packs and the gearbox isn't going anywhere. Keep it closed with some strapping material or a couple of camlock tie downs and it's just fine. And has a pair of handles for the shipping guy to grab.

Be sure to drain the oil. It is technically illegal to ship a full gearbox and if it spills they will treat it as a haz mat issue and make your life hell while your gearbox disappears into the back of a warehouse or gets dropped back on your doorstepp with a refusal to complete the shipment.

Mr. Walker's advice is spot-on and absolutely drain the oil. The transmission has to be secured inside whatever container used. I shipped a G50 in one of these Husky boxes recently. I caught it on sale for $50:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-37-in-Mobile-Job-Box-Utility-Cart-Black-209261/203668066
I should have taken a picture, but I cut 2 pieces of plywood to the shape of the inside of the box and then bolted the trans to the plywood using the existing trans mounting holes. I then used scrap 2x4s layed on the bottom of the box and secured those with screws from the outside bottom into the 2X4s. That gave me something solid to screw the plywood holding the trans to.

I shipped all the accessories separate to reduce the weight.

I've shipped and received a few gearboxes in Rubbermaid tubs. A cooler is better because there is more puncture resistance but both work. FedEx ground service I believe is a 125lb limit if marked as a commercial address (never had an issue with calling a house a commercial address). Some pieces of wood wedged in there and a little foam seems to be enough to keep them located.

It does not have to be that sturdy, but that will do.

I sent a transmission to John, Fishcop, in Australia, in a tin Tea chest. Jammed it in with wood and filled the spaces with beers. Luckily it all arrived intact and he used it in his 1970 RS clone.

Shipped a transmission in a Rubbermaid trash can, bell housing down with a piece of wood on bottom with hole cut to fit the rod. Stuffed it with foam, etc. Taped the top on and shipped Fedex. Weighed 98 lbs and cost about $100 from Baltimore to Ohio. Returned same way. Only problem was on the return leg, shifter was stuck in 3rd gear. Easy fix. Steve
