Could someone put me straight on the correct door mirrors for a 74?
 

Good morning, I have a 74 that I am returning to a stock-ish appearance and that means a metal finished driver side mirror, but I'm not sure on the sizing? I'd like to install one on the passenger side as well, and I know that it mounts in a different spot, meaning the mounting is a symmetrical with the driver side, but I'm not sure what size that should be.

I added one on my 74. I took a measurement from a door that had a mirror on that side. Also don't foget to buy the backing plate. Use that as a template for you drill holes.

Did you simply match the sizing of the mirror to what was on the door on Driver side?

In other words are the physical mirror dimensions the same between both sides?

I took the measurement off a later car a 85. I believe.

The correct size mirror for a 74 is the polished stainless, rectangular mirror that was used on these cars from 74-76. It is larger than the rectangular mirror for the 72-73 years. They mount in the same holes as the Druant mirrors from earlier years, but not later "flag" mirrors from the late 70's on. The driver side mirror will mount in the dog leg of the driver door, just in line with the A pillar. There will be holes on the inside door frame where the nuts to the mirror can be tightened. On the right side, the mirror mounts further reward and higher, closer to the 1/4 window. Holes will have to be drilled. You can use the rubber gasket as a template for the holes.

Those are going to be reissues from Porsche Classic. I bought the driver's side for my car and I'm happy with it.

If you mean that the size of the driver side mirror will be the same size as the passenger side mirror, then yes (the term "reference point" confused me.)

BE wary, I bought 2 new factory silver mirrors for my ‘75. The rod between the base and mirror on both is corroding after less than 1 yr. Not good as the car is in teh garage and not near the beach. My Porsche Dealer will probably replace them.

Most importantly, sit in the car and have someone place the passenger side mirror in position temporarily to be sure you have a clear view in the mirror while driving.

Yes, that's why it's important to look at the threads regarding placement of the right side mirrors. In pre-flag mirror cars, the inside door frame has stamped holes in the dog leg that correspond to the location of the early mirrors (pre-76). The hole locations are identical for both doors to allow drivers to properly locate the mirror fpr both left and right hand steering. Those locations are non-functional for a passenger side mirror, but many have mounted the passenger mirror there for symmetry, ease of install, and ignorance.

Research some threads on proper location of the passenger mirror and you will be fine. Lots on this site with good pictures for guidance.
