Dear Friends
I have this 1976 911s and because I´m very naive /stupid I though that replace the original flag mirror for a old ´73 style was just a matter or remove one and install the other, turns out its not ;-) So, my question is: Where is the correct location for the mirror? If I used the holes for the flag type, the new mirror will became too inclined in the car Also the new mirror is attached from the inside of the door and the location must be precise or will not be able to screw the new mirror from behind. You actually need to drill two large holes in the door (inside of door by the door, cowl, fender area) in order to mount that mirror in the correct location. It basically mounts in the upper hole area in that photo. The holes then get covered with rubber hole plugs.

![]() Here's the door of my 74. The previous owner, who made it a slant, had updated it to flags. When we restored the body we filled the flag holes and redrilled it for the proper chrome mirror.

OMG, on my 72 the person before decided to move the mirror closer to the rear by half an inch. I have no idea why he decided to do this. Im guessing there was a different mirror of some sort because there is another hole about another 3/4's of an inch even further back toward the rear. So in order to cover all 5 holes I have to mount the mirror which makes almost it impossible to tighten. I have to cut down Allen wrenches to get it tightened. Why am I going on, well because my mirror, or the adjustment part of it, became loose and was flopping around. Took it off yesterday and literally spent over two hours getting it back on. The problem with your situation is that you will have to plug one, or have it welded if you are planning to paint it.

I´ll repaint the whole car, so weld the holes ill be no problem
But on the actual holes the new mirror does not fit the position it to VERTICAL and the mirror even on it maximum up adjust still not level So i´m guessing i´ll have to relocate it a little bit up to a more horizontal area of the door |

Have someone make a template for you, using the front curved edge of the door to locate.

looking at replacing the black flag mirrors on my 80SC and do the rectangular early chrome flag mirrors cover the holes left from the removal of the factory SC flag mirrors or is there an oversized gasket or seal that would cover them? anyone been there done that? thanks

Please look at post 11; that is what needs to be done for a flag mirror replacement if you don't want to do the weld and paint way. The base of the chrome mirrors with standard gasket will not cover...based on other such posts and my direct experience on my 1985 (see post 111 here for my result -> so this is how a backdate project starts...).

So you can interpret what you are seeing here...for best fit of the mirror to cover the most of the holes, I drilled here. The left side mirror is the hardest as you have to drill the two holes through to the inner door panel and due to location one is right up at a crease as you can see. The mirror location on the other door doesn't require this. You can see the continuation of the holes through the inside door surface too. A long drill bit was used.
![]() I made a rectangular back plate to bridge across the holes and beyond. ![]() For the thin ABS parts that I made, I used the rubber gasket as the pattern and extended the outline about 3/16" all around. I then drilled out clearance holes for the two rivet heads you can see above so the ABS part sits flat. My recollection is that if you were to install the mirrors with the bases reversed (might look goofy though), you might get the bases to just about cover all holes. @SpyderMike - Did you ever try the later chrome mirrors (75, 912e, etc.)? I've read they have a larger base so I'm curious if they might cover the holes.
