Show me your Instrument cluster upgrade!
Ive currently been restoring my car and went for some upgrades to the clocks.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522446717.jpg These are the original clocks with a logo added and in the retro green lettering. Iv'e also changed the lenses to convex lenses ground down from acrylic clock lenses. My current issue is that I am struggling to find any Chrome bezel rings for the dash. I can find many Aluminium but the sharpness of chrome is what I need. So, show me your photos of your customised dash.. |
This is not mine, but I WANT it. Really clever idea of a combo gauge.
I’d like one of these, and I’d make a combo boost / head temp gauge to replace the gas tank gauge. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=238774 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...08fa42a0fd.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |
I’m going to start by saying I DID NOT DO THIS!!!
The previous owner replaced the clock and fuel gauge with heater vents from a Ford F-150. He seemed obsessed with air blowing on him. This is my 912e, and is going 911 style as soon as I get to it. This is really ugly. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d980ca7762.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...68c816a720.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
Gauge set for my 914-6. Led backlight with a small remote to change backlight color and intensity.

not as extensive as other, but I upgraded my gauge back lights to LED's, much nicer. Used the kit from a member on here, carmagic.us or something?

Nice! Where did you get that triple gauge ? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |
Cleaned up face design by removing logos, icons and extraneous markings, including KMH scale. Rally hand delete and minute markers deleted (a bit of a nod to 964 / 993 clock face). Integrated voltmeter a la 930 boost gauge. LED lighting. Couldn't be happier with the result.

something to aspire to
I'll just post these pics of Hong Kong 1, the Singer, for inspiration. Amazinghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522513283.gif

I love silver metal gauge rings, but even the Singers are bit too honking for me. I'd love a set of those, but a bit thinner or shorter, perhaps. Is that proprietary Singer stuff or do they just spec 'em to North Hollywood, et al?

The Singers are probably special. I don't know if those rings could be made shorter. Even the factory black rings are pretty deep. Here's another from that workshop but from a different HK car, number 10. How many Singers are there now? On every corner just about... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522525397.jpg |

Not mine, but saved in my ever growing inspiration pic collection.

The dash 911 badge also working with the ring colour and that ties in to the wheels. Seems to work with the leather details too. This is the rear shelf of the same car http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1522587508.JPG The Porsche lettering the same detail colour and more of the leather strap. Not very racer, but pretty classy! |
Best upgrade was LED instrument lights from Carmagic. The owner, Englebert, is a Pelican (I believe he is Rothaus on this forum).
You can actually see your instruments at night with the LEDs. He has a vintage yellowish look and a white look bulb. |
I always liked the reddish lighting of BMW gauges, the benefit purportedly being that red light is better for night vision, but it probably doesn't have much effect in a car with headlights on a public road...
https://www.autoblog.com/2017/02/28/bmw-x4-toyota-tacoma-gauge-illumination/ I fear installing LEDs, 'cause I usually have my gauges at a very dim setting at night, and LEDs are always sold as being brighter than the incandescents they replace. I guess there's always inline resistors, but the (negligible, insignificant) inefficiency is a bummer. The big problem at night is having dim gauges and a blindingly-bright blue high beam indicator...I assume indicator lights can't be dimmed for legal reasons, but ugh. http://clavinzero.com/misc/gauges-325is-red-light.jpg |

This was a non-functional unit used for mock up but now I have a real one to put in place (and now that these are available, I can share this!). There is a mount behind the dash that I designed that utilizes the factory tach rubber ring to hold it in place:

Are there any round LCD gauges that fit the stock location? I like the analog suckers, but there is a lot to be said for customizing a screen for different situations...
If it was OLED with good graphics, one might not even notice... |
I’ve been searching for a long time for a round screen gauge that can accept video inputs. Short story is, they don’t exist. What would be really nice is if we could have a multi-function guage to replace the clock or speedo with a GPS map that’s switchable to whatever we like. But that’s just me dreaming.

Google round lcd screens. They use a ton of processing power. Ever wonder why the Apple Watch is square. Thankfully Samsung came up with a solution. And offer a round lcd watch. Hopefully in the future they will be able to make larger round screens.

I was looking a couple years ago for a nice round digital display. Then found out it wasn’t going to happen. So I had this made up. It was a GPS speedo. Totally electric, the needle was tied to the processor. So it didn’t have to be hooked up to the transmission or anything. Cool stuff.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523130121.png

The pic below is my laptop screen, so there is no way we could fit all this into the space available, but it would be great to be able to display some of it. Anyone aware of devices that can be used for this? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523190615.jpg |

where did you get that speedo? my project had a mechanical speedo that went out with the old 915. looking for a proper 930 4 sp now. was wondering about GPS speedo rather than trying to calibrate a speedo driven by the gearbox and who knows what diameter tires I'll eventually have. also appreciate the pic of your dash. I am at the point of starting to think about putting my 78 SC/930 conversion back together. definitely want to do something custom with the dash, and adding some gauges. here is your pic right-side-up. :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523199360.jpg |

Rocketwrench - sorry, I found it a long time ago. I only have these:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523205124.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523205124.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523205124.JPG In addition to those posted. I think it was originally a 912 and at the time of the photos, was running under VW power. Seafeye - would also be interested in the source of your speedo. It could resolve many engine swap / kit car issues I've faced over the years! |

Tach
Having this one installed this week...
Saves me from rotating the tach... and can set some shift lights. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1523266382.jpg |
The dash pic was from my 944 racecar.
The digital/analog speedo was made for me by speed-gun. Not sure they are still in business. Their website is down or not working for me. I liked their product because it allowed me to not have to get info from the transmission. Here is a video to explain more. They would do custom printing on the gauge face as well. Sure hope they are still in business. Great products that worked very well. https://youtu.be/GgHV3v7ZYDM Quote:

The speedhut site worked for me early yesterday but doesn't seem to work now. I was playing with a few of their gauges. They had a lot to work with. You can upload custom images and text to print on the gauges which was pretty cool.

Interesting. The Nest thermostat got away from the high cost of non-rectangular screens by using a rectangular screen that they masked to resemble a circle...I wonder if the same technique could be used in place of the tach (a square behind the dash that simply gets cropped into a circle by the bezel on the front).
Maybe one day people will just start slapping old phones behind bezels...The new iPhone X is OLED, but I digress... |
