Leather on dashboard
Porsche 911 (930) Dashboard with or without leather.
Hi Gents! The dashboard on my Porsche 911 (930) from 1979 has until recently been coated with leather until I stripped it for the black leather. But a local Porsche expert is telling me, that Porsche original only have made these dashboard in vinyl without any leather coating. The original interior of the car is white, but both the dashboard and the two units marked 2 is in red vinyl. I would like to know, has these car original been manufactured with leather on the dashboard or not? Any opinions will be appreciated. Below picture of my dashboard stripped for black leather. .

My 79 930, and 86 930 both had factory leather dashes, as did my 80 Weissach 911. Many will replace leather dashes due to split seams or warping, with vinyl. However, the vinyl will slide/shift on the plastic dash. Leather will have the grippy, nappy part facing the dash.

I think they made leather up to a certain year but stopped (maybe stopped only in the US) because cars in the hotter states were warping dashes. I recall this from a Panorama article about the "last" 930 built (a black slant nose convertible) that got its start because the owner wanted a leather dash and they didnt want to do it, and when he convinced them to it snowballed into a really special car.

I had also heard you could get leather on those parts as a option. Not sure if it would show on an option code. I do know that vinyl will surfing the sun better than leather. When a good friend has his interior re-done in Cacan Red, his upholsterer said to use vinyl above the belt line as it will look the same and will tolerate the UV from the sun, and oils (like from your skin on the door tops). He also said the seat back s can one done in vinyl too for better wear and longevity.

Full factory leather in my '82, & I mean ALL like dash, door cards & tops, rear shelf, rear quarters, rear seats top & bottoms as well as both front seats (& yes -sides, seating surfaces & seat backs all leather ) incl. centre console too. Only vynl is A pillars & door pulls & storage bin covers aren't ( not sure why) but it's a complete factory original interior order. I'll be redoing the dash to OE leather btw, w/single top seam as factory not doing vynl, I'll be taking extra care to keep it as new as I can like quality leather dreams & treatments, I just really like the real feel/smell & look of leather

Like canamfan, my '77 had a full leather option with nearly every surface in leather. I did end up replacing the leather dash with a vinyl dash in 1997 due to warping and split seams, but the rest of the interior remains the original leather.

Must smell like a cow pasture in there. But in a good way, or course...

My leather dash is also warping from the leather, so I’m tending to think Alcantara as an option. I think all the factory ‘leather’ dashes were just leather covering over the original vinyl dash assembly.

My '83 Cab had a leather dash.
(confirmed orig. leather via window sticker), It was toasted, flakey and cracked like a dried out flour tortilla. Pulled off all the leather, and underneath was a pristine vinyl dash!
