Post 2,2 upgrade in a 2,0 engine case

Hello

Just to go sure:

Is it possible to use the 2,2 rods on a 2,2 upgrade?
As far I remeber they will not clear the case thats why I used 2,0 S rods in the old days but maybe someone can refresh my memory.

Roland,

Sorry I can't help with this. At least this will bump it to the top of the board. Maybe Warren, Bill or Wayne can help? It is still pretty early in the day in the US.

I can't find it right now but I believe I read in one of the Up-Fixin der Porsche issues that the 2.2 rods had an interference problem in the 2.0 case unless some machine work was done as the rods had a larger bottom end.

I'm not sure if that only applied to the aluminum case or the mag case as well.

Robert

Cool

Roland,
This will be about the only time I would ever get the chance to help you.

The change from 2.0L to was a bore size. You simply bought the 2.2L jugs and bolted them on. If fact Porsche in the past offered an oversized 2.2L 911E piston. You could have a second chance at a reasonable price to rebuild this motor or make a motor like it.

You would not have the benefit of a counterweighted crankshaft if you used one from the 2.L "T". I don't remember the 914-6 having a counterweighted crankshaft either.

This may be the clue to your question about the interference between the 2.L case and 2.2L rods. As I remember all 2.2L's had counterweighted cranks. Maybe a 2.0L engine case ("E"or"S")that utilized a counterweighted crankshaft could utilize the 2.2L rods?

Good luck,
David Duffield

Hello

Thanks to all. Robert had the same in memory.
Good to have a backbone if memory is foggy.

This was a request on a german board and it will be a 914/6 engine with 2,2 S internals.

I suggestet to use the 2,2 case or upgrade the original one with the oil squirters and do some basic work on the case but he just will bolt it togehter.

As far I remember the 2,2 S rods will hit the case "slightly" and I think the only way to go was using the 2,0 S rods or even better suiting carillos ( good to rev past 8 stone ). But I think he has a normal "shrink to vacuum" wallet and a maybe shot 2,2 S and will mix something the simplest way ( cheap power rules the world ).
So the 2,0 S rods will maybe burst his budget while the 2,2 rods will burst the case.
The other thing is that the light end from the rod has to be matched to the now still for the 2,2 rods designed heavier layout.
( oszilating masses )
Anyone out there who did it and what way ?
Simplest would be to drill the piston pin lighter. I called around several old Porsche nuts and noone could remember to go that way or had any specs for that on hand.

Ist there the upfixin article on the web ?
I have looked at the 911T.org section and didn´t spot that article.

Grüsse,
Roland
