Pop-out window parts interchange
 

Hi,

I've got a 1976 Porsche 912e, and I'd like to convert it to pop-out quarter windows.

I just found a deal on a pair of windows for SWB coupe.

Would the SWB pop-out quarter windows / trim fit a 76?

I've read the thread on the conversion, looks reasonably straightforward, just not sure if I need the windows from a LWB coupe.

The SWB pop-out quarters are chromed brass, at least up to 1967. Not sure if they changed to anodized aluminum in 1968 or 1969.

If the seal is the same on these from 1965 - 1975 or so, then it'll probably work.

I just did this to a '79 SC. The process is pretty straightforward, but there are several little details that are missing from a lot of posts. I was planning to do a detailed post of my own to share, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Feel free to ask here and I'll try to help if I can. I learned a lot in the process.

Any year pop out quarter window will fit any year 911 up to '89. Shouldn't matter if they are brass or alum.

Great, I've found a set from a SWB, and I'll go ahead and pick them up.

Thanks, Jameel, I'll be following holtjv thread on installing the pop-outs. I'm just currently putting together the parts. I'll be buying:

(1) the lower chrome pop-out window trim,
(2) pop-out windows with frames
(3) latches.
(4) welt crimp strips to crimp the headliner
(5) various bolts

I've got a complete tap set already

Are there any other parts that I'll need?

Any ideas what the "white plastic flange that fits between the latch and the headliner" is that they're talking about in the other thread is?

Any important details that are missing from holtjv's thread?

you will need to remove the vertical support on the B pillar to add the popouts. .

I can take a picture of that vertical support tonight for you.

That would be awesome, would appreciate it.

Someone somewhere here mentioned a VW bug part for the headliner crimping bead, it works great, and gives you about 3 times as much beading as you'll need.

you can order that pinch welt by the foot through Wolfgang international.

You will need to drill out the spot welds on the channel at the B pillar.
The slots for the popouts are behind it

Is that piece structural?

Wonder if it’s safe to remove it, or would it decrease the stiffness of the car???

Could you just cut out the slots in the outer channel piece?

The piece that is removed in literally like an ounce of steel, there is not structure to it at all. The only thing it does is creates a lip along the B pillar so the window seal can wrap around something.

I used a spot weld cutter on mine. The first one took a minute, since I had never used one before. The second one took 30 seconds. The other 10 or whatever took like 15 seconds each. Amazingly fast.

None structural item. To add to that. It’s not on the earlier 911 with popouts ;)

I still have a spot weld cutter, used it ages ago when I replaced the gas tank support on my 911T.

Andy, here are a few threads to assist. You are making a wise move by adding these. Either have no airflow or a lot of airflow on a hot day. I did not find the thread, but remember that possibly some cars came without proper mountings and some have them. Can't remember if it was the slots or the bracket with the 3 holes for the latch. I will look at my bare tube tomorrow and get back to you.

How many "foots" do we need? The bug pop outs look bigger, so I suspect the pre-cut ones would work if you don't mind trimming them.

Sure you can get the precut ones or save a few dollars and get the length you actual need.

Ha ha, the crimp trim is like a few dollars a foot, with how much we’re overpaying for used glass and used chrome trim, the headliner trim is going the least expensive thing here. By several orders of magnitude, the cheapest thing here.


I went out and measured and got a circumference of each window at about 6 feet.

I order a similar pinch seal by the 375' roll ever couple months .
