2.4 JE/AA Pistons & Cyliders
I've read a number of posts on this subject but I didn't see an answer to this:
How can AA Performance Products sell 86mm JE pistons & AA Biral cylinders for $1,619 and the pistons alone at JE are $1,738? (I confirmed JE's price today.) And kokoparts sells the same kit (I think it's the same) on EBAY for $1,495. thanks |

I believe Henry @ Supertech only buys the cylinders and specs the JE pistons correctly to them to good result. Appears no one has faith in the non-JE sets due to piston and ring QC issues, shame really as I'am sure many would pay a little extra to have that right,a quality B&P set as an example for the early 2.0 and 2.2 L would be a top seller. Anyone know if AA and kokoparts are the same parts???

Visited the AA site and got 86mm low compression set @ $1103.95 ,these are JE but you need to find if they are for Biral or cast iron barrels as they can't be mixed.
If you find the correct piston you bore out stock barrels to 86mm and you have a good combo for not a lot of $$,factory barrels are good quality cast iron.

Also consider price gouging. Frequently I’ve seen the identical part (say a transmission bearing, interior switch, etc ) for both a 924 and a 911. The 911 part can be ten times as expensive.
The JE pistons don’t cost anywhere near $1700 to make, they don’t cost any more or less to make for a 911 vs a VW. But they’ve colluded (perhaps unintentionally) to charge 911 owners ten times as much. If you look on eBay, you’ll see them selling trim pieces for $260, when you can get brand new Porsche pieces for $110. Many sellers don’t understand basic economics and will not budge on a price, they’d rather sit on a part for years waiting for an ‘angel buyer’ to come along, rather then sell it at a reasonable price. When I was confirming the JE price by phone they mentioned (more than once) that the price included a skirt coating that reduced wear. Could the pistons from kokoparts or AA Performance Products not have this skirt coating?
And is anyone familiar with this coating? thanks |
