Head removal on 1980 911 SC US
Removing cam sprockets and have 19mm bolt in lieu of 46 mm nut. Have sprocket holding tool but no one to help me. Acc to Wayne's book, it is nearly impossible to remove the bolt while holding the sprocket in place without two people. I am inclined to agree. Anyone have any idea if I will create problems for myself by trying to remove the bolt with an impact wrench?
Thanks, Darwin |

An impact wrench always has the potential to create problems. Have you tried a long breaker bar 2 1/2 ft ish? I would try long breaker first then go to impact gun.

Is it in the car or on a engine stand. I have done it by myself many times. Removal with impact wrench is fine, just don't install with it

I used a pipe to extend the holding tool's handle, and a long breaker bar on the nut.

Engine is out and on a stand. NP putting it back together with torque wrench. I will have help by then to secure the sprocket. Was just concerned because it seemed the obvious way to remove it but wasn't mentioned in the book. Thanks for the help.

Six point impact socket. No twelve point.

I don’t see how a second person could help. You place the two handles close to parallel and torque one against the other. It would be harder trying to stabilize yourself and another person pushing in opposite directions.

A hundred times easier, and with less possibility of component damage, to use an air impact (as others have mentioned) - don't even need to hold the sprocket with anything.
