Question oil tank conversion

I am in the process of converting my '78 930 K27 to tt k16 setup. To make more room in the passenger quarters , I am attempting to install a C2 oil tank. Can anybody forward a diagram which shows the oil tank plumbing, or describe what I will need to do to the stock oil lines to make it all work? I also see where I will have to install a later model C2 oil filler neck?, since it appears to be different from the integral oil filler neck of the earlier 911/930 oil tanks. Where can one find the oil filler neck without going to the dealer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rick

the inner panel of the C2 is vastly different than the 930. good luck. how about a 72 tank, and weld in the filler flap? it'll look like a RUF.

Have you considered putting the tank up front in the smugglers box? Stephen at Imagine Auto has done the C2 tank thing. You might want to contact him.

Does anybody have a picture of the C2 oil console/oil filler neck setup? Where can one be had? I do not have the 964 factory manual that shows the layout. Stephen mounted his C2 oil tank under the passenger rear quarter as I am proposing to do, without having to go to extreme measures. He did not have any diagrams, and it was difficult to describe over the phone. Vastly different to me would be an oil filler neck on the drivers side.

Thanks. this was very helpful. I had to look at it awhile to get over the fact that the image is mirrored. Why in the world did Porsche weld on the oil filler necks to the C2 inner panel ?I just discovered this fact when calling for a used part (according to the parts specialist). I may go with a remote fill, such as the self contained filler neck from a 944 so that I do not have to pour my oil so far forward and down in the engine compartment. All of this will hopefully be well worth the extra room on the passenger side for the TT exhaust.

I have installed a 964 oil tank in an early car before...

I am attaching a few pictures of the parts used. I used a 964/993 oil tank, a 964 oil filter console, a 993 oil filler spout, a 9?? S-pipe to lead from oil tank to filler spout, and misc. 964 oil lines, dipstick, and rubber seals in engine compartment.

The 964 oil tank will fit in the 911 rear quarter without any problems. You will simply need to fabricate a couple of simple brackets to hang the oil tank. If you look at the pictures, you will notice that the hoses enter the engine compartment through a triangle shaped hole that is sealed with the triangle shaped gasket that the hoses and dipstick enter through. When you remove your oil tank, you can take a piece of sheet aluminum to fill the large hole that is left. This is where I mounted the 964 oil filter console. The most difficult part is the oil filler tube. For the 964, Porsche ran the filler line through the boxed frame. As a result, you will not be able to use this piece. I located the metal s-shaped pipe (notice the flat shape) that I ran from the oil tank to the 993 oil filler.

A local guy w/ a track only 3.6 Motec in a n 84 chassis has a setup similar to MyTurbo3.6's setup. It works great!

My Turbo 3.6
The pictures are a great help. Why did you use the "S" pipe? It looks as though you could have used the whole 993 unit as it was. I already have the 964 oil filter assembly, but was scratching my head on the filler assembly. The 993 filler assembly looks like the trick. Anybody have one of those for sale? How did you gauge the placement of the tank when you made the install? Since I am also re-using my 930 thermostat, it looks as though the C2 tank will have few extra opening that will neeed to be plugged. What did you use the two fittings on the bottom of the tank for? They look to be redundant and of no use since I have the earlier thermostat. What did you do with the vent adjacent to the dipstick?
thanks for the help.
Rick

I used the S-pipe because I had to run it along the frame structure in the exposed quarter area (basically the same location as the 964, just not inside the frame structure). Since this area is exposed to a lot of road debris, I switched from a rubber S-hose to the metal one…I also had rubbing issues due to limited space from large wheels and tires. You don’t want to loose an oil line in this area and dump your oil tank onto you rear wheels. The 993 filler was the second, or third generation of the forward mounted oil tank. It is a better/easier solution; you just need to ensure that you have enough of an angle since it is gravity filled…

The tank placement is pretty easy. Due to the contour of the tank and location of things like the thermostat and hard lines, it basically only fits in there one way. Attach the stubby lines from the thermostat to the tank to get the proper height when test fitting. Be sure to mount the tank using the rubber type brackets like the 964/993.

As for the lines, you have surpassed my limited memory…I will dig up some pictures if I can find them that should show where all of the lines were routed. I transplanted all of the hard lines and front-mounted 964 oil cooler at the same time. I did use all of the lines…

One of the more difficult parts was cutting the triangle shape hole…it was quite difficult to get it in the correct place and proper shape without damaging the rear quarter. If you notice in the pictures, this area is contoured different on the 964 than on the 911. However, it can be done…once installed, it looked like it came from the factory.

If you need them, I have extras of all of the parts that went into this conversion…just drop me an email and I will dig them out.

Another thing...I tried using a 944 oil filler (similar to the 993 one) but was unable to get the angles to work out...
