What is this cooler- curved 28 row

Was going through some parts I never used to sell on the forum but I don’t see this anywhere. It’s 28 rows has all the mounting brackets and connects like the straight version but it’s curved. Was originally told it was a European sc model but can find anything about it anywhere.

Normal 28 row cooler that has been damaged in an accident.

irl 04-15-2018 02:45 PM

I don’t think so. The inside row is perfectly spread and the outside curvature is perfectly symmetrical.

Just got lucky in the accident.

I would be interested in the bottom mounting bracket and rubber isolators if you are considering selling those bits separately.

Yep, I can see it now. Something tells me this left handed smokeshifter has been flying around here for years. Well unlike the two previous scumbags that I researched that had sold it to unsuspecting members, I will not be. It prob still works but most likely isn’t repairable. Guess I’ll hang it on the garage wall.

merlinfe 04-15-2018 04:36 PM

Why don't you have it pressure tested and sell it with the results if they are good?

irl 04-15-2018 04:45 PM

Here is who sold it to me as a rare curved Euro version 4 years ago. Could be the only time I’ve been scammed.

Yes, it appears to be a ROW SC cooler. I used to have an 82 ROW RHD that used this cooler. But mine had straight undamaged tubes.

Flojo 04-16-2018 04:31 AM

funny. lloks like PO bent the rear tubes apart to make way for better fitment (?).

+ on that. I have the same. it's heavy but super robust.
the tubes must all be straight.
this model replaced the trombone in 1980 to late 1982. then came the Carrera-alloy-cooler

Not quite, the 28 row cooler continued into early 3.2 production in 1984.

Both my 1983 SC and 1984 3.2 have the 28 row cooler from new.

Curvy cooler

Looks like the tank is TIG welded to the core and likely the tubes are soldered in using either soft or hard silver solder. Likely hard solder.
This being my cooler I would cafefully examine the tube solder joints, straighten it, and check the solder joints again. More than one heat exchanger soldered with hard solder has been repaired with soft solder.

I can't help but chuckle at the "super rare"..... :D:D:D

Sorry about the unfortunate incident, but the seller may have not known better?

I mean, anyone could have told him it was simply bent and he would have removed IMO.

canamfan 04-16-2018 10:29 AM

It would be nice to salvage/repair those like Tea Tray mentioned, I've always thought these were a bit of a piece of artful work, BTW I did have them as original equipment on my '84

What is so strange is that it literally is perfectly symmetrical bend. The middle six tubes each three bend out opposite each other. It looks like someone tried to make one with more air flow through the middle. Really didnt think it was in an accident. Funny it may work even better :)

proporsche 04-16-2018 02:26 PM

Hi Eddie...It will be nice to see the picture from the opening of the bend pipes..it is very possible the previous owner try to put in a fan...

Ill take more pictures but the back looks just like the front, the only pipes spread is the middle row perfectly symmetrical but you couldnt get a fan in there. front and back row just have a nice gradual curve outward.

group911@aol.co 04-16-2018 02:38 PM

I've straightened them before without issue. They are surprisingly flexible.

irl 04-16-2018 02:39 PM

What I find strange is the degree of bend on middle row seems a lot more significant than the front and back row bend. if it had been compressed in an accident why are they not all bent to a similar angle with a similar amount of compression?
