I just bought a 74 911 about 3 weeks ago.
The car had been siting for a couple of years I have driven it about 700 miles without any problems temp about 210 and it has been taking along time to warm up about 15miles Is this normal? Until the other day in traffic (outside temp 55) it went up to 250 after I started moving again it went back down. Now it seems to be running about 225 when I stop and 215 when moving. But the longer I sit it seems to keep getting hotter so I have been avoiding traffic and have stop driving until fixed. The fan belt is tight and I just cleaned the oil tank but no differance could it be the termostat? Is there any way to check it and how easy is it to remove. The motor seems to have plenty of power and dosnt leak it also is full of oil It smokes a little when idling for a few minutes at below 1000 rpm.I think it is valveseals? This is my first porsche and this is new to me I have worked on some corvairs but I see how you could get hooked on driving a porsche. Any suggestions would be very welcome. |

It sounds like your engine-mounted thermostat was formerly stuck open and is now stuck mostly closed!
It isn't easy or possible to get at it with the CIS system in the way and the engine in place. Do a 'partial drop' of the engine and transaxle about 5"-6" leaving axles and fuel lines still attached -- support engine and transaxle with floor jack, and loosen shift coupler (mark both shift rod and coupler) and the four M12 bolts through center of engine/trans mounts ... lower carefully until shift rod sticking out of trans nosecone clears the body, and lower another 3"-4". It may actually be easier to get at the thermostat from the right rear wheel opening with the wheel removed. Two 10 mm nuts are all that hold the thermostat in place. Sometimes an old beer/soft drink opener will aid in getting the housing to come loose! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 11-03-2001).] |

Bruce Anderson says you can test them by heating an old saucepan (never to be used for food again) in motor oil ... it should be fully open by 200° F ... using a meat or candy thermometer. Of course, you could use a thermocouple probe on a digital multimeter or thermometer, if available!
