Fiberglass Sunroof panels
Whats the deal with these panels.
They save weight, But do they leave your Sunroof operational. or do you patch it up. |

I don't have any pics of the replacement panel, but the removal of the sunroof assembly is an easy 1 hr. job.
Eventually, I would like to do this to my SC. |

How is it attached and blended? Does it flex differently to the steel roof around it (causing problems with the paint one day?)

I think guys use adhesive, and leave the line, so there's not a problem with different rates of expansion.
The better solution is to get a whole roof secition in fiberglass or carbon fiber. But just painting a single piece is cheaper.

I cut my whole roof skin off so I could lower the CG, and finish all the welds on the top of the roll cage. When I recieved the roof skin I drew an outline my sharpy, then scribed a line about 2" inboard of the outline of the roof skin, and proceeded to cut.
I havent glued it on, but I will use that 3M panel adhesive when I do. Removing the sunroof isnt as easy as you think ( if you want to get all the weight out) removing the tracks is a pain in the balls. Here are some pics ![]() this is with the roof cut off ![]() This is a trial fit of the panels and roof.

The panel isnt what weighs the most. Its a simple sheet metal stamping with some gaskets. What contributes the weight is the operating mechanism, the motor and cables, and the tracks the sunroof runs in....
All told I think the "dunroof delete by owner" option weighs about 30lbs. The actuall sunroof panel is a small percentage of that
