911 oilcooler
Hello i have a volkswagenbus with a 911 2.7 engine not sure of the year but from what i read has to be somewhere between 73-78. I was wondering where i could find the way to determine what year engine it is, off of the engine. the plaque is kinda worn.
I was wondering also would this oil cooler work http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/index.mv?photo+200302200050372617 thanks for the time.. u might have to cut and paste link. |

The engine serial number is stamped on the crankcase; right side of the blower housing on a horizontal surface. Post the numbers and someone here will have the info.
This oil cooler will only work effectively on a bypass-type oiling system where only part of the oil circulates through it due to the smallish inlet/outlets (approx. 5/8"?). External 911 oil coolers must be full flow as the oil passages have to be large enough to carry the volume. This means a minimum of -12AN or -16AN size lines (approx. 3/4" - 1" ID). In addition, Porsches have an external thermostat that routes oil through the ext. cooler when the oil temperatures reaches a certain temp. Hope this helps, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Thank you for your reply, ok so i guess from what you said sorry not really mechanically inclined. That the oil cooler will not work do to the fact it doesnt have big enough holes for the oil to flow through fast enough.
Yes i have a bunch of pics of the bus should i email them to u |

notice the rats nest of wires to the left of the engine, attached to some type of circuit board. I think that might be the fuel injection controller. Thinking if i swithed to webers i will get rid of a lot of the wires and since im not original owner i dont have a real clue as to where the wires go =C

![]() Good luck with the bus. Always wanted on until I got a 911. |

Check out the Mazda RX-7 oil coolers. They have big enough inlets to handle the oil the 911 can pump and can be easily mounted on a bus in front or under the cargo floor. Internal oil temp regulator as well that only opens them up at 180F.
I plan on running two in a series on my next engine for my '66 Westi. A 2.1 Vanagon wasserboxer turned into a T5 oxy-boxer. Old school Solex 40P11-4 carbs as well from a 356. Also with that 2.7L you might want to get matching Porsche brakes to stop all that power. Check out www.germanlook.com for my bus in the tech area. Or visit www.oldspeed.com for the 944 brake conversion kits. Talk to Russell. As for the wires, keep the CIS fuel injection. It is better than carbs by a long shot. Get some Bosch FI books and learn about it and you will love it. A long term project is to add CIS FI to the listed motor above. So what are you running in the quarter? Embarass any Mustangs lately? Thom, when are you going to GL your bus man!? I have seen the flares on your 911S, a vintage nazi you are not sir ![]()

Yeah quarter miles um not at all this moment, i think i have a bad alternator so i got one and im going to put it in once i can feel my hands outside again. So it isnt running. PLus another little project i need to do is to change the 1982 vanagon automatic transmission to a 905 911 transmission and clutch. I dont know why the original owner wanted auto but i dont thats for sure. The brakes i do need to get done, because when it was driving i was having to pump the brakes to stop =D
so i know i need to get that fixed. |

btw that thing to the right of the fan is the AC compressor it might be good to remove it if it's not hooked up.
They make a 915 tranny and a 901 tranny. The 915 is newer and has a conventional shift pattern while the 901 has 1st as down and to the left and reverse as up and the left. Hope it clarify's things a little. BTW Throm's the man with porsche powered buses

Are you sure you need a cooler. I'm running a 2.4E motor w/5 speed in my '68 crewcab. Have cruised at 80 mph during the summer and the temp stays around 210.

Actually the RX7 cooler fittings are much too small. Guys using those coolers cut them off and weld on larger fittings.

No im not sure i need a cooler.. I have bought the side mounted scoops for the bus but havnt put them on. I just think the motor is getting to hot as when it was running it would drive for like half an hour then it would stop whereever i went and not start for awhile sometimes 30min sometimes 4 hours. So i thought it was it was to hot and wouldnt start

Actually for the RX-7 coolers I like the 1st generation the best as the fittings are easier. But anyother year will work just fine as well. There were a couple years that used a water/oil cooler thing and it sucked, maybe 84-86. But you can tell because there is not a real oil cooler under the radiator. I was thinking the inlets are about 14AN which would do the trick, byt less than 16AN which I think is prefered. Of course as mentioned you could weld on any nipple/bung that you wanted.
Just for the record Thom does not have a Porsche powered bus. Yet. Screw the side scoops. Not effective. Sounds like a CIS problem over an overheating issue. I would be sure to install all the proper gauges to ensure your engine is running right. Good Luck,
