1977 911S Targa wheel suggestion

Hey Guys,
I have a 1977 911 Targa and I am looking to upgrade on wheels while not spend as much as a quarter of the car on wheels...

I currently have 14" Original Fuchs wheels on 195/70/R14 tires. 14s are too small for my taste and this car so I would love to put some 16" Fuchs but what I have seen are too expensive. I found nice 17" replicas made by EMPI on the Jbugs site and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with these wheels? Have you put them on? WOuld 17" be too big on a narrow body 911? The price is right at 699.00 for all 4 and of course I will keep my stock Fuchs (unless to trade for another set of Fuchs) but I am really contemplating buying these. ANy advise is appreciated, thanks!

Regards,
Oscar

Hi Oscar,

Take a look at the link below to a set of wheels by a company called Euromeister - they make Fuch replicas. There is also a company called Braid, but their wheels are quite a bit more. Please let us know if you have any questions.

14" wheels... those seem early, and rare. I don't know the price on 14" fuchs, but I'm guessing you could probably make a post in the marketplace forum asking what they are worth. Sell them and buy some nice used real Fuchs. I've got a set of 16"X 7 myself that I'm looking to sell in a few months.

Here's a shot of a my midyear with the 16" Fuchs to give you an idea of how they would look. 205/50 on 16"X7 Fuchs:

Euromeisters from our host are a good deal. Here are some real Fuchs 16x6 fronts and 16x7 rears on my old '77. Rears did require rolling the fenders.

i'd personally keep an eye out for a good set of 16x7 "real" fuchs -- not a rare size and not too expensive --

Regards,
Oscar

The optional wheels on your car when it was new are 6x15ET36 w/ 185/70 x15 tires
those tires are 25.7" tall x 7.6" section width

the 195/70 x14 tires you have now are ~24.8" x7.8" ie a little shorter and a little wider .

you can use 7 x15 or 16 ET23.3 wheels all around but you will want to keep tire height down for best fit
in 15 tires for use on 6ET36 185/70 or 195/65(~25.1 x 8) or 205/55(~23.9 x 8.4")
in 16 tires for use on 6ET36 195/55(~24.4 x 8) or 205/55(~24.8 x 8)

same tires would be usable on 7ET23.3

in 17 you would still want a 6ET36 or 7ET23.3 wheel tires would be 205/50(~25.1 x 8.4) maybe a 215/45(~24.7") but this last is going to be close

Yeah, lets see if my 14" are worth more to someone else and maybe I can do a trade or sell to buy a real set.

The 14's may also be attractive to the VW Crowd. Check out www.thesamba.com classifieds for prices.

My brother had a 76 with 16's mounted with 225/50/16 tires on back, he had it lowered and it looked really good. His was a real narrow fender body like yours, here is a pic when he was stationed in Germany.

I'm sure he had to have some good adjustments so he will not have any issues with rubbing. I drove it once and did not notice any rubbing at all on back or front. So this is a example of what yours could look like, depending which way you want to go as far wheels is concern. Good luck!

Good luck on the Fuchs, BTW, why don't you put the 14s on your VW panel??

I have a 77 911s, and I bought 17" Euromeisters. Love them. They transformed the car.
