Looking for advice: Interior
Hi,
I picked up my 1977 911 Targa about a week and a half ago, I've been driving the car and absolutely love it. The interior was updated by the previous owner however the carpeting was not glued to the car and it slides around. If I lift the carpet up, there is bare metal underneath it. I was hoping for suggestions on what I should do with it? I was thinking of putting in some sound dampening and then glue-ing down the carpet, does that seem right? If so, any suggestions for sound dampening and/or what type of glue to use? Also, it currently doesn't have a radio and I'd like to put a period correct one in. Do you know of any on-line vendors that may have some ideas? Thanks, |

When you say bare metal, do you mean no paint or anything? If so, I think prep, primer and paint the metal first is crucial for rust protection.
Beyond that, with regard to sound deadening and carpet, there are several ways you can go depending on how much you want to spend and how much weight your willing to add. Tremelune did an excellent write up on the options: Interior sound deadening, noise reduction, and thermal insulation I would also check out Nineball write up on his carpet install here: it seems like everyone else has done it, so why not me... For radio options - what is your budget?
Porsche has an $879 option - search the web for CDR210RADIO

Thanks for the tips on the interior!
Mark, thanks for the idea on the radio but I don't think it will work because the insurance company I will be using to get collector plates for my car requires a period correct radio and I don't think the CDR210 was correct in '77 |

Take all the carpets and floor mats out of the car, then do a thorough wash job on the car. Use a lot of water. Once you are done, open the doors and look in the floors. Are you seeing water? That alone should tell you whether to start gluing stuff down that you can't easily remove to dry out the floor pans!

Don't glue. Water goes underneath and has a hard time evaporating. Why are you trying ot glue stuff down? Velcro works fine on the carpets.

You may not have water getting into the floor pan now but if you do in the future, you do not want to have things glued in place that can absorb and hold water. If you ever do track or AX events they will make you remove the carpets. You don’t want them glued down for that. Post some pictures if you can. It will be helpful in making suggestions. You can put some sound deadening down. I did it when I was in my early days of ownership. Probably would not do it now if I had to do it all over again.

In my other project I'm gluing the sound deadening (and carpet) only in areas gravity won't keep it flat. Rear seat back, tunnel, firewall (not a Pcar). On the floors, sound deadening will go down, a rubber mat runner from HD cut to size will go on top of that and the carpet set will go on top of that...all loose.
My restored SC has none of that. The carpet is laid on top of the steel floor pans. Nice and simple. Why would anyone want to sound deaden an old 911? Anyway, these cars either rusted once, are going to rust, or will rust again.

KMoore, you have that black Targa that was on BaT, no? Given BC's requirements, you're probably best off getting a vintage Blaupunkt - and if you want to be able to play music from your phone or something, you can have someone add an AUX input to it.

Moore, do you need a radio per-se? My radio sits unused on my dash and I have a nice 2 channel amp under my passenger seat running the front speakers. I plugged a bluetooth receiver into the hidden amp (around $25 from amazon, etc.) and use my iPhone as my headend for both music (on the iPhone) and streaming stuff (including radio station news/etc.) off the internet. Gives me everything I want and I've installed a rennline magnetic mount onto my clock bezel to hold my iPhone in line of sight ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount-Rennline, Inc. -- works great for me and would seem to solve your vintage issue, as nothing modern would be in the open. Happy to provide more details.
