Carrera 3.2 - engine dies when oil cap is opened

Hello,
I just finished a full engine rebuild from a Carrera 3.2 MY 85.
After fitting the engine in the car, everything went perfect, it runs well, but when I opened the oil cap to adjust the oil level at its idle, the engine dies.

Does anyone know the possible cause for this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Alex ..search is you answer...what you are missing is this piece inside the breather hose to the oil tank.

A drop in rpm is normal b/c you introduce a leak into your vacuum system when you remove the cap, but stalling isn't normal.
As ivan says, you could be missing the restrictor, or your idle is set too low, or you have another leak somewhere to begin with.

You might consider checking your Idle Air Control Valve. Does the car run normal when the cap is on? What I mean is, no idle searching once warmed up and at idle. I would be a bit surprised if the restrictor is missing since someone would have had to purposely remove it. You might want to verify your idle switch is functioning as well. I believe it's called the TPS or IPS.

Hi Fellas,

I've had the same problem of stalling when removing the oil filler cap with my 84 3.2.
I had replaced the breather hose and because I didn't know the restrictor was supposed to be there, I never noticed it was missing. After seeing this post the lights went on and I checked and found it to be missing. THANK YOU ALL for the question and the answer!!

Following on this topic I hope after I install the restrictor it might help my idle speed after engine is warmed up? Tends to idle steady around 1100 rpm. I'd appreciate if anyone have some thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, with all due respect to AlexJ (his thread), the restrictor won't affect your idle when the system is closed (cap on and no air leak). '84s should idle at 800. What is the best method to set idle speed?

See Cabmando's post above too - he is referring to a small micro switch that tells the DME you're in idle position. If you are not in idle position or if this micro switch is broken (open), the ICV (idle control valve) won't step in to maintain a normal idle.

The ICV will vibe or buzz when working and you can feel it.
Not being a jerk, but if this is an issue, please start a new thread for the best help.

Carrera 3.2 - engine dies when oil cap is opened

AlexJ,
I had the exact same issue with my rebuild earlier this year. I had replaced the breather hose that connects to the oil tank and forgot to install the restrictor. The engine started fine, but idled just a bit high. Each time I would remove the oil cap the engine would die within a few seconds.
It is normal for a drop in revs when removing the oil cap, but the restrictor is there to restrict how much air goes back to the engine.

This is an old thread but I am wondering if it's been resolved. If yes how?

I am having the same issue. Rebuilt engine, all new hoses. Have the restrictor also. Still the engine dies as soon as I remove the cap. I do not notice any drivabiity issues and idles fine also with the cap in place, but when I was trying to smog the car it was hard to keep it within the range. It was hesitating at 1500 rpm and even backfired once. I am suspecting what ever causing the stalling might causing the low rpm hesitation...

Mixture setting off after the rebuild? Running too lean? Vacuum leak?
