Heat shield rear bumper 3.2

Hi All,

Recently I bought a 3.2 targa and replaced the rear bumper for an EU bumper (less holes and converted to small bumper blocks)

Now, after a test run I noticed that the rear bumper was very hot! Almost to hot to put your hand on. I don't want the nice freshly painted bumper to get damaged from the heat.

I will remove the catalytic convertor in de near future, i heard that this will reduce heat in the exhaust, but what else can i do?

From the factory only the turbo has a heatshield between the rear silencer and the bumper. Does this one fit an N/A one also?

Or am i worrying to much?!

Carreras had the heat shield too, at least some of the time.
I have one with the mufflers, I believe.

Bruce, thanks for the suggestion. I did look in the PET of the 1987-1989 model. I will check earlier models.

Based on the '87-'89 parts catalog, the muffler heat shield is a turbo-only item.

My '87 3.2 doesn't have one, and when I purchased the car (from the original owner) it sure looked like there were no exhaust or rear bumper mods or repairs.

That being said, the rear bumper does get quite hot. Not hot enough to blister paint or cause any apparent damage to plastic parts, but still....

Actually the heat shield works very well to reduce heat up of the bumper by a significant amount.

I made my own with sheet metal found at the local hardware store, cut to size and used 3 10MM hex head bolts that fit perfectly on the bumper inside, even made a 1/2" bevel lip to keep it secure.

The cuts to form the curve and 2.3rd way down a bend to allow it to sit inside the bumper away from the muffler, the bottom sharp edge was purposely left a bit longer so it could catch the inside of the bumper to stay secure and not wobble or vibrate.

Just line the inside of the bumper with this:

Thermo-Tec 13575 12" X 24" Adhesive Backed Heat Barrier

Available on Amazon. I'm running a Fiberglass rear bumper with a turbo and this stuff completely solved the problem.

My 86 (10/85 build) originally had one..some shop got lazy about putting it back.
Was thinking of putting one in but probably will not fit with my trailer hitch.

The rear bumper heat shield is not a turbo only item. The part for the 911 is 911.503.157.01, however it is NLA so you would have to source a used one.

If you REALLY want to reduce the heat.. the BEST option is to get your entire exhaust (headers, mufflers, etc...) ceramic coated at a place like Jet-Hot. Pick the color white, or something very close to it and you will be AMAZED at how much the temps dropped.

As an example, after doing this to mine... I can now put my hand completely around the exhaust immediately after driving the car and not burn the skin off immediately!!

The shield you are referring to is a shield between the exhaust and the rear lights / reflector. Not between the exhaust and bumper :-)

I will look into the sticky back stuff that was mentioned. And might try to find a place to ceramic coat parts of the exhaust system.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

I do not recall PAG Katalog ever having heat shields their. Strange but if anything debri deflector would be a good idea as that area gets a ton of debris over time.

I lined the tin work above the muffler with heat reflecting tape panels, and I wrapped my muffler with ceramic heat schools cloth tape.
