At that point, I'd love to put together a car like Jack's, but with a 965 engine. Or something like Hank Watt's current ride, with something close to 600HP in a '72 RSR-look. One of the problems he has is he keeps spinning the rear tires on the wheels, so he can't keep them balanced. But he has the driving skills to go with the car (understatement of the century). If you were to hand me the keys to something like that, I'd save myself the medical bills and tow it directly to the scrap yard.

fortunately for me, for the reasons that Thom mention, I don't have much mod money

And that's only part of it... All the other mods (suspension, brakes, etc., etc.) would just wear both my wallet and me out. A few mods are good, and not at all necessary (as I continually find) to the engine. BTW: not to be a grammar nazi, but it's "Is there such a thing as too much HP ?" ![]()

You'll know when you reach that point, one day you'll be driving, you'll jump on it and say to yourself it time to get rid of this thing, before it gets rid of me.

Too much power? Sure, things happen fast enough on the track for me as it is.

On the track, there is definitely such thing as too much HP.
Lot's of HP can be a barrier to developing good driving skills. It encourages development of "point and shoot" driving style. These guys fall apart in low powered cars, the HP is a crutch. It really doesn't take much HP to get through turns fast or brake properly. The rest is just a drag race. I think it best to increase the HP as the skill level increases, then stop increasing when it's fast enough.

hp must match the cars suspension and braking systems. with that you can never have to much hp. look at porsches can am cars. 600, 800, 1000, 1200 hp dont forget the power to weight ratios of these cars. more hp is what they strive for.....

I agree with Chuck, driver skill will win over horsepower most days. I attended a moto-cross event in my earlier days. There was a pro rider entered in the 500 cc open class. He was riding a 125 Honda SL 4 stroke. Guess who ran all over the big bore 2 strokes. Yep, he beat em all.

On street tires, with no fancy-pants traction aids? Absolutely. At a certain point, it all just becomes melted rubber and tire smoke.

Drag races are for fast cars, road races are for fast drivers.

On a straight track then I guess you never have enough HP. I would say with a P-car (unless you are just outright drag racing) as the HP increases, mods to the rest of the car have to go along with it. Otherwise you are overpowered and out of control.

A silly question if you ask me. Would you want a car w/ a top speed of 400mph and 0-60 in 1 second? Think that would be usable? The best driver in the world cannot overcome the laws of physics and use it. And with all due respect, no one on this board is in that catagory.
Neck-snapping acceleration is a lot of fun, even on the street, but there is definitely a point of diminshing/non-existent returns, usually when the power output exceeds the chassis potential and/or driver's skill. Anyone who doubts this, just go out and buy a new 1 liter sport bike and try riding it at its limit. On second thought, no, don't do that. ![]() |
