Automatic antenna question
My 84 right sided antenna is always in the up position. Recently purchased car. I think the antenna motor has seized up. I prefer to have the antenna always down but do not where to start with this. The antenna motor apparently is in the right fender and I cannot see it from the frunk. Any suggestions on removal?

If it’s anything like my ‘83 you can access it by removing the front right tire or possibly just by turning the steering wheel hard left.
Do you have a factory or aftermarket radio? Aftermarket radios have different behaviors. Some the antenna goes up when the head unit is on at all. Others only raise the antenna when the radio itself is engaged. Also sometimes people install manual switches to raise/lower the antenna. Less common, but has been done. You might have a glance under the dash.

Tirwin The car came with the Porsche Classic radio, which I think has a separate antenna built in. I do not hear the motor on the old antenna when the radio off/on.
Was removing it difficult? |

antenna
Rxsep, before you remove it, leave it in and try and find out why it is not retracting,
as when you turn radio off, or ignition off, antenna should retract. So remove front rt wheel, make sure car is in neutral, key off. you will look up see there is a ground wire attached, and a power wire also attached check these out make sure they are good conections. i am going on trying to remember a few years ago when i did mine. The other wires that are critical is the connection on back of radio for antenna to work, for memory on Blaupunkt its number 9. also antenna has to be connected , and antenna from factory goes up and down when radio is turned on and off , all the way up and down. They are easy to remove to clean and check all connections, clean inside antenna and put some light 3 in 1 oil on antenna ,pull up and down by hand, then it should work when finished cleaning etc.Others may help that i have missed on,regards. |

If the motor is dead, often times you can simply press the antenna back down into the housing. If you don't use the radio this is the more attractive option. Otherwise simply pull the right front wheel for easy access. Typically the units aren't expensive, you can replace components but my experience is that something else will just break. I would replace the entire antenna unit.

The motor in mine goes but lot of the time the antenna doesn’t move. I knocked it entering the garage once when the door was still going up so I assume slight bend causing friction. Not sure if it can be repaired or is a replace job.

Check the wiring. The power and ground connects near the ignition switch with an in-line fuse. I forget the color of the trigger wire to the radio, possibly white. All three are in a black covered harness that comes through body at the upper right side kick panel, right of the glove box.

Rx..if you have an original Hirschmann Porsche automatic antenna it is really not hard to remove and repair.
I have done it so many times ,the repair.Take it a part, lubricate clean the points inside and it will work again. You can always get a new mast for it. Ivan |

...i was able to take the antenna off while tires turned all the way left. The unit itself fell apart as I tried to open it since there was major corrosion around it. Was unable to get it to work but at least I was able to manually get the cable down so all least the antenna does not stick up like it used to. Probably will order a replacement since I ended up temporarily closing the casing with the aid of some good old fashion duct tape.
