Looking for Advice: 1977 Targa Oil Leak

Hi,

I picked up my 1977 911 Targa about 6 weeks ago and have been driving it somewhat regularly with the nice weather. j

I noticed a few weeks back that was a bit of oil on my garage floor so I placed some cardboard under the engine and sure enough, when I return home from a drive, there is some oil.

I'm quite new to the 911 and would appreciate some advice or suggestions on how I can diagnose this issue.

It appears the oil is leaking down from the passenger side header/muffler area. I'll post some pics in a bit.

Oil leaks are like roof leaks, hard to determine where the actual source is as it migrates around.

Below is the thread I had on one of mine, leaked long before I could track it down and became bad enough to notice the spray/leak source.

OP, start by washing the engine then use mirrors to see where it coming from.

Your pics are basically where it is ending up.

Has the engine ever been top ended or rebuilt?

Yes, that is how I found my fresh oil leak, had to clean the engine first.

I answered your PM "7783911", first photo, top large circled area, biggest complete bolt head in the yellow circle was the leak source. The other bolt head in that photo is just a cover plate bolt.

Oil sending unit possibly leaking was a suggestion to look into John Walker's Shop made in that thread. I would it assume it applies to your situation as well, good luck.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a wash and then start looking for the leak,

Cheers!

KMoore68,

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned having too much oil. These mid years expel any excess oil into the airbox. At the bottom of the airbox is a drain. Porsche has carefully engineered this drain to empty onto the passenger side exhaust.

Remove your air filter and see if you have oil on the bottom of the airbox. If you do, don't fill the oil as far up the dip stick. About half way or less is about right.
