Here are 86 coupe pics

This is the 86 I've only had for a few months. It's basically solid and I'm driving it as much as possible.
It needs some things that will run into dollars ie climate, cruise, sun roof leak, 1st gear syncros, cold idle surge but I'll deal and post about them as I have time.

Welcome! Nice ride. I don't see too many center arm rests; good for you!

I hated the center arm rest so it currently resides in the garage. It was always in the way when reaching for the shifter. This one was also missing screws that hold it in place. Were those stock or add ons?

I tried to buy the car so I wouldn't have to work on it and gave the PO who owns a shop a list of things that he agreed to fix. So far, all of his fixes haven't been up to snuff and have failed so I'll end up taking care of them. He's basically MIA.

I'll buy other stuff from him but understand that I can't take his word and it will be cash and carry. This car was still a good enough deal that would have bought it. It's unfortunate because I could use someone trustworthy to deal with the body work. I won't name him on a forum but will to individuals wanting work in middle TN.

The swaybar rusted out so I bought the Wevo brackets and had a shop replace them. He said that one side of the body had cracks that he welded, painted and undercoated. Said the Wevo brackets were good quality metal and easy to weld.

Also, there is something wrong with the heater boxes. I didn't see and haven't had the car up since I bought it to know. The PO flushed and charged the AC but it was only cooling 10* so that too needs to be sorted. The footwell blowers were slow but I see there is a work around to replace the motors only instead of spending $800 for Porsche gold parts.

1st gear syncros are shot and 2nd needs more pressure than I like. The engine has supposedly been rebuilt by a guy that worked at a local Porsche shop that is no longer around. I think that's probably correct because there isn't any oil leaking.

The PO also said he did the brakes. I don't know how extensive but the brakes rub going around a tight corner. Applying the brakes stops the noise. Perhaps a pad is hanging or???
Cruise control doesn't work.

There are some rust bubbles like less than the size of a pencil eraser under the right headlight and some more by the left quarter window gasket. Whoever installed the gasket left space between the seal and the window that allows water to run down the window and cause the rust. I'll take care of the little places but won't do a repaint for quite a while.

The engine surges at cold idle and I don't feel the air regulator doing anything. I'll test & clean when it warms up then decide what to do.

The black decal that covers the rear torsion bar is new and has a bubble under it. I expect that is is another example of the PO not doing complete work but I'll pull it off to make sure it isn't rust. I don't care for the decal anyway.

There is still water on the floorboard when it rains hard. The sunroof seals are relatively new but don't line up perfectly. I'll start by cleaning the drains.

Some time, I'll change the door seals and add sound deadening. I took the OE stuff off the floor to look for rust. I didn't find any.

I'm in the process of finishing a work shop and will put as much wrenching as possible off until it's complete but am hoping to have this stuff finished by the end of summer. This alone is enough but wouldn't be difficult except there are other projects in line too.

Check front wheel bearings for correct ( tightness)? Jack it up and see if there is any play.

Congrats on the "new" '86. I've got the same color sport seats in my black coupe.

I would check the drain tube for the center cowl air box in the trunk. If that plastic hose becomes disconnected and isn't draining water below the car (you should be able to see a hose poking down beneath the car), the water could drain into the passenger footwell area. It's easy to pull back the carpet on the forward wall, remove the wooden floorboard and then unscrew the air conditioning thing from the wall. Then you can get a look inside there and see if anything isn't right near the drain.

Idle surge could be that somebody didn't adjust the idle properly. There's a test socket in the engine bay fuse panel and you have to jumper a couple of female pin locations to properly isolate the ICV (idle control valve) in order to avoid the engine computer from trying to compensate for incorrect idle settings.

If you ever get around to trouble shooting the cruise, there is a test procedure documented in the Bentley guide that will pinpoint the issue (stalk, clutch switch, cruise module, etc.)

Most people will tell you that the majority of the time, the issue is the cruise module itself. There are many threads on this forum dedicated to it. The good news is that there are several folks that will fix an inoperative cruise module for relatively cheap money, and you can drive the car fine during the time that its disconnected.

Thanks, I'm working through the Bentley and bought a used cruise module off James Dean who I know from the Mercedes forums. Simply plugging the module in didn't fix the cruise. Weather will improve in a few weeks and I'll get on it more then.
