Tire Selection Decision
I need tires and I would like to hear your suggestions. I want them to be grippy and quiet. It rains here in the pacific northwest, so certain tires will not work. Here are some pics to illustrate my preferences. In the first pic, the tread pattern is "V" shaped. My last set were like this, and I liked those tires (which are NLA). In the second pic is a typical "ultra performance all season" tire which, to me, looks like it belongs on a mini-van. Not my preference. In the third pic is an 'extreme' performance summer tire that would hydroplane like crazy on any wet road. Unacceptable. Recommend me an awesome tire with a tread pattern similar to the first pic.

Have you checked out the Conti DW? It does not have the V tread pattern that you reference but is a legit performance tire to handle the wet. I have their DWS on my daily (not 911) and love them.

I am also a huge fan of the Conti DW or DWS, I've run them on several daily drivers. I run Kumhos on the 911, for now at least, but will probably switch to Contis when the time comes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Bridgestone RE-71R

looks like the bridgestone re-71 r tires have the tread pattern you want (but as "r" compound tires, will wear pretty quickly and don't seem to get the best reviews in the wet), but that the contis referenced above (and the michelin pilot a/s 3+ that I run/love) all have the "minivan" tread pattern that you don't like.

That said, seems to me that you're really limiting yourself on tire selection by basing your choices on the appearance of something one won't really see unless they get down on the ground. |
I just picked up some of the Goodrich G-Force Comp Sport 2
So far so good. |

What about the new Bridgestone Potenza S007A or
The somewhat new Continental Extreme Contact Sport ? Would be interested if anyone has fitted this tire in stock sizes... 205/55 Front & 225/50 Rear. |
Just bought a set of the Firehawk Indy 500 for a new to me Boxster. They are a rebranded Bridgestone performance tire (RE-0003???) sold someplace else in the world. Go to Tire Rack and look at the reviews. They sold me.

Been working on a 79 SC with the Firehawk Indy 500. Drove nice while throwing it around a few turns. Brakes don’t lock up easy which is my clue to old or hard compound tires. It’s the goofy name that gets me....
|
S007a, Indy 500 and extreme contact sport all lack the tread pattern Superman indicates he’s seeking - rules out a lot of nice choices
|
toyo t1r have that pattern

Tire rack sorts tires by use here is their selection of Ultra high-Performance A/S tires. do some reading, if you don't find anything to your taste use the menu on the left side for others |
I appreciate the input.
I had guessed that the V tread pattern is more high performance than the ribbed pattern. Perhaps I assumed incorrectly. I just want them to be sticky and predictable. The S-04 has been around a LOOONG time. Good tire, I assume. RE-71 looks like a stickier tire with 'acceptable' wet performance. Hmmmmm.... |
TireRack - good advice, My choice would be Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 first and Continental ExtremeContact Sport second.

new tread depth is about what we used to get from shaved tires |

^^^ Toyo tires are the best..imo

Goodyear's G-Force Comp Sport 2 is a great all-around tire: inexpensive, sticky on dry roads, good in the rain, even suitable for occasional autocross and track use. I've enjoyed several sets on a fast 912 and on strictly street-driven cars. Check Tire Rack for sizes and prices.

I am very happy with the Continental Extreme Contract Sport (formerly known as the DW) I just put on my 911. good grip in dry and wet and ok at Autocross as well.
I am also running the all season Continental DWS-06 on my Mercedes. also a great tire with some cold weather bones. When the Bridgestone 760 Sports die on my Z-4, it will get a set of the Continental DWS-06's as well. Can't say enough good things. |
