Presently, the exhaust set up on my 87 Carrera consists of a 100 cell catalytic converter mated with a 1 in 1 out Monty free flow muffler.
Recently I added Sal Carceller MAF kit and the car runs great! sound is sporty, AIR/FUEL readouts are good BUT exhaust smells burnt fuel smell especially on idle. I thoroughly researched The various CAT offerings and bought a 300 CPI UNIVERSAL "VIBRANT" 7525 catalytic converter utilizing SS substrate. (Please read the product details if interested to know more vibrantperformance.com) " Vibrant Performance and Global Emissions Systems Inc. (GESI) have teamed up to supply a series of OBD2 high flow Catalytic Converters that provide peace of mind and reliability under extreme conditions while providing highly effective long term emission control solutions. " Does anyone has experience with this particular CAT? specifically with elimination of the smell! If not, if you switched in the past from a 100 cell or a Pre muffler to a 300 cell, such as offered by FABSPEED, how effective was the elimination of smell? ALSO...What sound can I expect to have from a 300 cell CAT? |

Just curious, how did it smell before the MAF kit was installed?

Performance is great but smell is the same...it is time to deal with it. I intend to use the left and right sides of the existing Cat and some welding for installing the new 300 cpi Vibrant 7525 catalytic converter.

For what its worth, I had a catback from Vibrant on my 2001 Ford Focus. Very well constructed unit, and the sound was very nice. Not overly loud, but a nice deep tone. They seem to know what they're doing, so that might be the way to go for a new cat.
I was hoping to avoid the Civic with coffee can exhaust sound, and they did not disappoint.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread: I thoroughly researched The various CAT offerings and bought a 300 CPI UNIVERSAL "VIBRANT" 7525 catalytic converter utilizing SS substrate. (Please read the product details if interested to know more vibrantperformance.com)
" Vibrant Performance and Global Emissions Systems Inc. (GESI) have teamed up to supply a series of OBD2 high flow Catalytic Converters that provide peace of mind and reliability under extreme conditions while providing highly effective long term emission control solutions. " Well, I had this particular catalytic converter installed and I am pleased to report that my expectations have been met. The 300 cell unit with a metal substrate performed as well or better then my previous 100 cell one AND the burnt fuel smell IS GONE. I am also glad to have joined the GREEN movement but not at the expense of my car's performance. ![]() |

Still here

Are you comparing new vs old or are both new devices ?
Your old 100 cell CC could be defective for what we know. |

I have one waiting to go on my exhaust, all I can say is these things are TINY. I can't wait to put it on to have the stench of unburned fuel gone and no loss in performance. The one I have (3" inlet, 4" OD, 7" total length)is rated up to 500hp without causing any restrictions to flow.

The cat from VIBRANT #7525 IS 2.5" OD AND 7" WHOLE LENGTH. You do not need the 3" for our cars...google this model# for all the details...it is not cheap.
Yes, I am comparing it to the 100 cell I took off. it was not defective, performabce was great, but it smelled at the stop light or when when driving slowly with my window open. my AFR were good (I have an AEM AFR gauge permanently installed) I had to take 3 pictures to demonstrate the whole install... 1. heat exchange & heat exchange cross over. this section was cut from my old Cat just after the o2 sensor and the new cat was welded to it. 2. a 2.5 ss pipe was welded to the other side of the cat 3. the pipe with a new flange 2.5" were welded and fastened to my Monty muffler. I hope my explanations are clear... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That thing is tiny. Thanks for the pics. Outstanding.
How can something that small be that effective? I can't lay down welds like that. ![]() My mig welds are "tight" on new metal but there ain't no stack of dimes bead.

True, but when you have a reasonably sized turbo hanging off the back, the 3" is a necessity for me. My mistake, I did not realize that they made a 2.5" version of the HO.
