What DME chip is this?
I’ve only had this car for 8 months but it seems like the previous owner was into modifying as I am. The car is an 89 Coupe. The PO installed 930 front brakes which I am thankful for. I also noticed a K&N filter installed as well as holes drilled into the air box. I reinstalled the factory air filter because I noticed that red oil in the AFM and idle control valve when I was cleaning it out. I wanted to see if the PO had installed a Steve Wong Chip so I removed the DME. Opened it up and during that process I noticed that someone had definitely been in there since the DME was mounted with only one nut and the tabs under the DME looked like they had been pried up before. Here’s a pic. Is this stock or a performance chip?
Thanks! ![]() Last edited by RPV911; 04-04-2019 at 10:12 AM.. |

That is not a stock chip and does not look like a SW chip either.
If I had that chip in hand I could tell you exactly what's different between it and a factory 89 chip. I can tell you that you do have a 87-89 DME with 28 pin chip socket.

That looks like a very early Autothority prom. When they first started burning software in the 80’s, long before anyone else even tried, the hand wrote info just like that. Back in the late 80’s they used my ‘86 on their dyno to create software, I must have 5 or 6 different proms they made for me- SSI and sport exhaust,SSI and 964 cams, headers and cams, headers cams and their MAF intake, headers cams MAF and 3.4 p&c’s- and every one had a hand written tag just like that on it.
In the “old” days Autothority- Joel and Larry- we’re pioneers in ECU hacking. Those old maps were crude when compared to what Steve Wong can do today. But back then we were still using old IBM 386 PC’s and dot matrix printers.

The common "holes in the airbox" mod doesn't create any power on the dyno. (Porsche didn't leave anything that easy on the table.) The airbox muffles intake noise so the only real effect of putting holes in the box is making it louder and people's "butt dyno" tells them that noise equals power.

Good to know that the filter oil won’t cause any damage.
