2 Hours from Home...Ignition Switch Failed. Can I "hotwire"?
Hi all. My ignition switch failed, and I'm a couple hours from home. Car is fine overnight...can I hotwire to start it? It works with a push start, but I'm solo and may need to stop for gas or something.
You can PM me if you'd rather not put this info out to the world. ![]() Thanks! Michael

no steering lock issues I assume when running?
id drive it home if not tonite then tomorrow with bump starts before pulling and jumping wires from under the dash. unless you know what you are doing and have tools this sounds like a stretch. but then ive been drinking.. find a local gas a station with slope and purchase enough fuel to get home before bumping it started. also, pee hard before you leave so you don't have to stop for that on the ride home. and im not PM'ing you...

Bump it in third. Had that happen to me picking up dry cleaning. Had the guys in the dry cleaning shop push me up hill so I could u-turn facing down hill. It’s a nice family dry cleaner with strong boys!

Had the same happen to me in North Carolina. Left it running all the way back to Michigan.
Gas stops...nobody said anything about the car running. When using the bathroom at the gas station I could hear the rumble of my exhaust!

emptyo..as the boys said do not attempt this job if you do not know what it takes...
How do you know it is an ignition switch? Most likely your have a bad ground by the transmission or yellow wire is loose on starter Ivan it should no problem going to San Diego ..you must be near LA so 405 south you do need to go for gas at all;-)

Should be, especially if your ignition still turns on, just not to crank.
If you just need to activate the starter then find the wire to the starter at the engine bay connector - yellow from the factory - and bridge it to 12v+. Obviously check it is in neutral first. |

Well, I was asking what it takes. Thus the thread. We are all heading to the Pelican Cars and Coffee tomorrow and then another couple events, so driving right back to SD is not an option I’m pursuing. Thanks anyway all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

do some checking first as i said connection of the yellow wire on starter and ground strap between the trany and the body..loosen it and make it tight again very common problem..and the starter of course

We Don't even know what year your car is or if the wiring is stock, trying to Hotwire not a good idea, plus it's a pain to get to the wires you need. How do you know it's the ignition switch??
